Cruising Along

I've gotta go to the bathroom....

"Carnival cruises cancels next trips for stricken ship" by Ramit Plushnick-Masti  |  Associated Press, February 14, 2013

HOUSTON — Carnival Cruise Lines has canceled a dozen more voyages aboard the Triumph and acknowledged that the ship had been plagued by other mechanical problems in the weeks before an engine-room fire left it powerless in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company’s announcement on Wednesday came as the Triumph was being towed to a port in Mobile, Ala., with more than 4,000 people on board, some of whom have complained to relatives that conditions on the ship are dismal and that they have limited access to food and bathrooms....

"A cruise ship disabled for five nightmarish days in the Gulf finally docked with some 4,200 people aboard late Thursday, passengers raucously cheering the end to an ocean odyssey they say was marked by overflowing toilets, food shortages and foul odors. Kalin Hill, of Houston, who boarded the Triumph as part of a bachelorette party, said, ‘‘there’s poop and urine all along the floor. The floor is flooded with sewer water ... and we had to poop in bags.’’

"Maritime law experts said Thursday that passengers could win if they can show the cruise line was negligent in letting the ship sail, despite past engine problems, and that their mental suffering was so severe they had to seek medical or psychological care."

Pooping in a bag qualifies with me.

"Senator Charles Schumer of New York is calling on the cruise ship industry to adopt a ‘‘bill of rights’’ to guarantee passengers certain protections while aboard their ships. The Democrat said on Sunday he’ll ask industry leaders to voluntarily adopt the guidelines. In the past two months at least three ships carrying US passengers experienced problems, including power failures."

"A fire that broke out aboard a Royal Caribbean ship Monday did enough damage that the rest of the cruise was canceled and the cruise line said the more than 2,200 passengers aboard will be flown from the Bahamas back to Baltimore."

I think I'll just cancel.
