Death in Danvers

"Danvers teacher slain, quiet new student held" by Peter Schworm and John R. Ellement |  Globe Staff, October 23, 2013

DANVERS — A quiet but amiable boy who had found his way in a new town by excelling on the soccer field was accused Wednesday of killing a young, popular Danvers High School math teacher and dumping her body in the woods behind the school.

Philip Chism, 14, who moved to Danvers this summer from Tennessee, was ordered held without bail in the death of Colleen Ritzer, a 24-year-old from Andover recalled as a natural teacher deeply devoted to her students....

A candlelight vigil was held Wednesday night. Authorities provided few details about the killing or possible motive....

A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation said the teacher was stabbed and cut. It appeared, according to the official, that a box cutter was used....

Then all sharp instruments and potential weapons must be removed from schools.

The law enforcement official said surveillance footage from inside the school showed Chism pushing a recycling bin through the hall and outside the building. Authorities are trying to determine if Ritzer’s body was in the bin.

Evidence was found at multiple scenes at the school and the surrounding woods, police said. Police charged Chism after interviewing him and reviewing the footage.

Students at the vigil said they were mystified that such a violent crime could happen on school grounds while there were so many afterschool activities taking place....

Several of Chism’s soccer teammates said he mysteriously vanished Tuesday afternoon, missing the team practice at 4 p.m. and a team dinner at 6. Teammates last saw the youth running away from the practice field, breathlessly telling them he had something he needed to take care of....

I guess the cameras caught him.

NEXT DAY UPDATE:

Slain Danvers teacher had asked suspect to stay late

As Danvers High School reopened Thursday morning to provide grief counseling to students and families, and as hundreds of parents gathered for an evening meeting with police and school officials, the accounts provided new details of the final hours of Ritzer’s life and evidence of a lengthy interaction with Chism, who has been charged with first-degree murder. He is being held without bail.

Meanwhile, some are raising the limited hangout of pre$cription pharmaceuticals (and rightly so to a certain degree since the ma$$ media is $ilent on the $ubject) -- which is being used to push mental health testing upon the rest of us with questions like "What do you think happened on 9/11?" If you don't regurgitate the official story it's a check mark and prescription.

I don't mean to be callous or cruel but I am taking on face value that this happened. When it comes to the Globe and its contents that is no longer a given at any time regarding any story. Sorry.

Classes resume at Danvers High School after teacher slaying

He was a great kid who was bummed about moving? So what? That doesn't justify killing someone. What's with the sympathy for a murderer, Globe?

I'm reminded of the Lord and Remy cases, readers.

"The former top prosecutor in Middlesex County will head a review of Somerville schools’ travel policy after accusations that a student was raped on a school-sanctioned trip in August. The decision to review policy came within weeks of alleged attacks during an overnight team-building trip to a camp in Western Massachusetts attended by the high school soccer and football teams."

Not to be callous but maybe soccer and football, like guns, is the problem.

"Questions remain about the possible role of adult supervisors at the camp who Somerville officials have said were “yards, if not feet away” when the assaults occurred. While that issue has not been raised in court, Pierantozzi said earlier the school system would launch an investigation with an eye toward improving supervisory procedures."

The adults were feet away on the other side of the wall and door. WTF?

I could be mistaken, but it's the last time the Globe asked them. It is the last time I will on this event.
