Remy's Heroic Return

He has become a defender of children:

"Details emerge on alleged jailhouse attack by Remy" by Evan Allen | Globe staff   April 08, 2014

Jared Remy, the son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, allegedly beat and hurled homophobic slurs at a fellow Cambridge jail inmate last week because Remy believed him to be a child molester, according to Middlesex County prosecutors.

“I had a plan and I did it,” Remy told investigators, according to court documents filed in Cambridge District Court. “I took . . . boiling hot water and threw it in the guy’s face. I took a piece of soap and threw it at his face and hit him with a chair. Once I slipped, I punched him in the face.”

Remy, 35, is awaiting trial on murder charges in the death of his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel, on Aug. 15.

The alleged attack on the inmate occurred just before 10 a.m. on April 3, as the victim, identified in court documents as Jemery Hodges, 27, was watching television. Hodges is awaiting trial in Middlesex County on charges of possession and distribution of child pornography, said a spokeswoman for the district attorney.

According to federal court documents, Hodges pleaded guilty last year in Mississippi to transporting a minor to engage in commercial sex acts and sexual exploitation of a minor by production of sexually explicit material. Hodges was sentenced to 23 years and two months in federal prison.

A lawyer for Hodges, Bruce Ferg, declined to comment on the alleged jail assault because he has not yet spoken to his client. He confirmed Hodges’ involvement in the Mississippi case.

According to the Cambridge District Court documents, a surveillance video captured the jailhouse attack.

In the video, Hodges is shown sitting in front of the television as Remy emerges from bunks and throws a liquid and then soap at Hodges. Remy then picks up a green plastic chair and repeatedly hits Hodges before punching him, according to the documents.

During the attack, according to the documents, Hodges retreated between the bunks.

After the attack, Hodges had two dime-sized burn marks on his face and superficial cuts on his left hand. He told authorities that he had never spoken to Remy before, but that Remy had called him a homosexual slur during the alleged attack.

Remy allegedly told authorities afterward: “I did what I had to do. I got a child molester.’’

The documents also indicate that Remy was assaulted on March 31 by a different inmate, but that Remy did not want to press charges. Remy told authorities he may have been assaulted because “he is a rich kid, his name in the newspaper.”

Remy is scheduled to be arraigned April 24 in Cambridge District Court on eight counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of assault and battery stemming from the jailhouse fight.

His lawyer, Edward P. Ryan Jr., said he would enter a plea of not guilty on Remy’s behalf.

“I have to conduct my own investigation and review all the police reports, as well as the videos and see what transpired,” he said.

Ryan said he is likely to challenge the admissibility of his client’s statements because, while Remy was read his Miranda rights according to the documents, authorities should have known he was represented and offered him a chance to speak with Ryan.

Remy is accused of fatally stabbing Martel, the mother of their 5-year-old daughter, at the Waltham apartment they shared.
