A Taunton man wanted for allegedly violating his probation on an aggravated rape conviction was captured in Florida Thursday night.
James M. Bowen, 50, ran from Norfolk Superior Court in April after he learned that the Probation Department was trying to arrest him for allegedly violating his probation on a 2001 aggravated rape conviction for an attack in Canton.
Bowen, a Level 3 registered sex offender, had allegedly cut off his GPS tracking device, said Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey.
A few hours later, state troopers went to Bowen’s home on Blueberry Lane, where they blocked his driveway. Bowen was still able to get into a Mercedes-Benz, drive across his lawn, and speed away, Morrissey said in a statement.
After two weeks of attempting to find Bowen locally, Morrissey’s office requested the help of the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, he said in the statement.
With the help of the US Marshals Service, troopers found Bowen in Daytona Beach, Fla., Thursday.
“This is an excellent example of law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels working together to make the public safe from a dangerous and increasingly desperate convict,” Morrissey said.
