"Fewer private college loans
Private college loans, the source of tuition payments for a growing number of families, are becoming increasingly scarce in the beleaguered credit market, a new survey of for-profit colleges has found.

More than 60 percent of officials at for-profit institutions said their students have been unable to obtain private loans because of tightened credit requirements, the 1,450-member Career College Association announced last week.
"The private student lending market has almost disappeared, except for an economically elite few, as a result of the global credit crunch," said Harris N. Miller, association president.

Miller said many of the colleges, which attract a large proportion of older and low-income students, are providing loans or payment plans themselves in the absence of other sources.
Students typically take out private loans when financial aid and government-subsidized loans fall short of total college costs. More than 90 percent of officials said their students face such a funding gap, and almost 70 percent said more students are dropping out as a result.

Students at for-profit and community colleges are seen as riskier borrowers because of relatively low graduation rates and frequently poor credit histories, and have struggled to find loans the past several months.
