Pacifists Play Football

"The Dorchester team.... aims to help youths who might otherwise be involved in violence"

By playing FOOTBALL?

Yeah, that's not a VIOLENT, MILITARISTIC GAME or anything!

"Dorchester Pop Warner squad involved in brawl" by Stephanie Ebbert, Globe Staff | December 13, 2008

They went undefeated all season. They won a berth at the national championship in Florida. To afford the trip, they got a grant from the NFL and donations from parents and well-wishers. Then, while attending one of the most prestigious junior football tournaments in the country this week, the Dorchester Eagles Pop Warner football team got into a brawl with another team at its hotel and now faces suspension or expulsion from the league....

Excuse me? This is POP WARNER football?

The fight broke out the next day in the dining room of the hotel between members of the midget teams, ages 11 to 15....

Oh, you gotta be KIDDING!!!

The Dorchester team - whose slogan, Cousin said, is "building champions and saving lives" - aims to help youths who might otherwise be involved in violence.

Does that strike anyone else as OXYMORONIC?

--more--"

Then again, you are talking to a basketballer; anyone who has ever seen those guys knows we can't fight!
