"Family asks court to declare fugitive dead" by Associated Press | June 17, 2010
BELGRADE, Serbia — The family of former Bosnian Serb army commander Ratko Mladic asked a Serbian court yesterday to declare him officially dead — a move authorities called an attempt to undermine efforts to catch Europe’s most-wanted war crimes fugitive.
“Mladic was last seen in February 2003,’’ family lawyer Milos Saljic said. “After that, despite determined search by international and local security services, there is no evidence that he’s alive.’’
Saljic said Mladic, who would be 68, had been seriously ill and could not have survived without medical care. He added that the death certificate would help the family, which he claimed was being harassed.
Sounds like a tall, Saudi Arabian man that is known all over the world.
Authorities said the move appeared designed to undermine efforts by Serbia’s pro-Western government to locate Mladic, who has been on the run since he was indicted for genocide in 1995 by a UN war crimes court.
Bruno Vekaric, Serbia’s deputy war crimes prosecutor, has dismissed the family’s initiative as “speculation.’’
Mladic’s arrest is crucial for Serbia’s bid to become a member of the European Union.Why would they want to do that?

“The family has decided to stop the agony because it has long been convinced that General Mladic is no longer alive,’’ Saljic told the Associated Press by telephone. “No one has seen him for seven years.’’

Federal and state authorities said Bajram Asllani, 29, of Mitrovica, Kosovo, was named in an April criminal complaint unsealed yesterday, accusing him of being part of a conspiracy that also has led to the indictment of eight people.

In July 2009, eight people were indicted on charges of conspiracy on the same charges that Asllani faces and others. They included Boyd and his sons, Zakariya and Dylan; and Hysen Sherifi, a native of Kosovo and US legal permanent resident in North Carolina.
Boyd and Sherifi were later charged with plotting to kill US military personnel at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Va.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Authorities believe Daniel Patrick Boyd used tales of fighting the Soviets alongside the mujahedeen to recruit followers into a North Carolina terrorism ring, but US officials in the Middle East while he was there doubt his stories.
The former officials questioned whether Boyd, 39, had any affiliation with the Islamic guerrillas, noting the Soviets had all but left Afghanistan by the time the young, blond Muslim convert arrived from America two decades ago. Boyd’s stories were part of an indictment accusing him and seven followers of violent jihad overseas. The indictment claims some of the men were training in military-style tactics and that all were plotting to kill, kidnap, and maim in a holy war overseas.

Regardless of whether Boyd was ever actually involved with the mujahedeen, authorities said he was preparing for holy war and found more than two dozen weapons, a stockpile of ammunition, and gas masks at his house. At least one of Boyd’s tales has changed over time....

Elizabeth Jones, who was deputy chief of mission for the US embassy in Islamabad, was involved in trying to free the Boyd brothers from jail in 1991. She said she never received any information that they had been involved with any mujahedeen group.
