Just Over the Border: Texas Grave Robbery

The motivation? Sell the urn as scrap metal.

"Family searches for father’s stolen ashes; Thief took purse with his remains from car in Texas" by Matt Byrne, Globe Correspondent | June 13, 2010

The remains of a Massachusetts man who died in March were stolen from his family’s car in Austin, Texas, last week, a day before they planned a memorial service, family members said.

The remains were inside his granddaughter’s purse, which was taken from the car while family members had lunch Thursday in a nearby deli....

The incident has garnered media attention in Austin....

The circumstances add to the mystery of the theft, which occurred in what Charlene Postell described as a busy public area.

“The car was still locked,’’ she said. “They reached past my GPS, left a suitcase in the back; there was my bag that usually has my laptop in it, they didn’t take anything else.’’

All kidding aside. I hoped they dumped the old boy somewhere nice.
