"2 killed in small-plane crash near airport

Two people were killed when their small plane crashed on a street yesterday afternoon, Portland officials said. Smoke billowed from the Yak-52, a Soviet training aircraft, after it hit Western Avenue not long after taking off from Portland International Jetport. The victims were identified as pilot Mark Haskell, 42, and Thomas Casagrande, 66. Their hometowns were not provided. Federal Aviation Administration officials were investigating the 3:30 p.m. crash."
