Creepy California

This first one sends shivers up my spine:

"US sues Calif. firm, farms in labor case" April 21, 2011|Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — A federal agency has filed lawsuits claiming more than 200 Thai workers were forced to live in rat-infested housing and were physically abused by supervisors after being recruited by a California-based labor contractor to work on farms in Hawaii and Washington.

The two lawsuits were filed Tuesday in Washington state and Hawaii against Beverly Hills-based Global Horizons Inc. along with six farms in Hawaii and two in Washington.

Global Horizons lured Thai workers to the US between 2003 and 2007 with promises of steady jobs and agricultural visas, then confiscated their passports and threatened to deport them if they complained about conditions, commission officials said.

"Man sought in blast outside synagogue

SANTA MONICA — Local and federal law enforcement officers were searching yesterday for a man thought to be responsible for an explosion outside a synagogue. The explosion, which caused minor damage to the Chabad House Lubavitch synagogue Thursday, was found to have been caused by a homemade explosive device, police said. Investigators have linked the attack to Ron Hirsch, 60, a transient who had sought charity there (New York Times)."

What, they turn him down?

"Investigators do not have a motive for the blast, and Jewish groups said they did not believe anti-Semitism was necessarily behind it. Authorities said Hirsch was arrested in Ohio after a rabbi became suspicious of a man asking for a place to stay.

WTF?

Btw, isn't Hirsch a Jewish name?

"Ex-hospital head gets 248 years for sex abuse" February 24, 2011|Associated Press

LONG BEACH, Calif. — A former state mental hospital director was sentenced yesterday to 248 years in prison for molesting his adopted son over 10 years as part of what prosecutors contended was a pattern of abuse that spanned four decades and ensnared a dozen boys.

Superior Court Judge James B. Pierce called defendant Claude Foulk, 63, a “sick, sick man’’ and said he should have been the No. 1 patient at the mental hospital he oversaw....

Foulk, the former head of Napa State Hospital, was convicted of 20 counts of forcible oral copulation, nine counts of sodomy, and two counts of lewd acts for abuse between 1992 and 2001....

“It’s not unlike slavery of old, to go through the [foster] system and obtain a human being and attempt to mold that individual to satisfy one’s own sexual desires. Disgusting,’’ the judge said.

Foulk testified his son had a history of lying....

Kind of like a newspaper, huh?

"A million dead fish clog Calif. marina" March 09, 2011|Associated Press

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. — An estimated 1 million fish turned up dead yesterday in a Southern California marina, creating a floating feast for pelicans, gulls, and other sea life and a stinky mess for harbor authorities.

Boaters awakened to find a carpet of small silvery fish surrounding their vessels, said Staci Gabrielli, marine coordinator for King Harbor Marina on the Los Angeles County coast. Authorities said there was also a 12- to 18-inch layer of dead fish on the bottom of the marina.

California Fish and Game officials said the fish were sardines that apparently depleted the water of oxygen and suffocated.

“All indications are it’s a naturally occurring event,’’ said Andrew Hughan, a Fish and Game spokesman at the scene.

The die-off was unusual but not unprecedented, he said.

“In the world of fishing, this is an afternoon’s catch,’’ he noted.

Nonetheless, the scale was impressive to locals at King Harbor, which shelters about 1,400 boats on south Santa Monica Bay.

“The fishermen say they’ve never seen anything this bad that wasn’t red tide,’’ Hughan said, referring to the natural blooms of toxic algae that can kill fish.

I'm just wondering how much longer AmeriKan officials are going to lie to us?

Until their tongues turn to sand?

Hughan said water samples showed no oils or chemicals that could have contributed to the deaths.

That's a lie.

He said some of the fish were being shipped to a Fish and Game laboratory for study but the cause was likely to be uncomplicated.

The fish appeared to have come into the marina during the night and probably couldn’t find their way out, he said.

That the best lame-ass excuse you can come up with?

"Principal shot, killed at California elementary school; janitor is arrested" February 03, 2011|Associated Press

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A 50-year-old elementary school principal was shot and killed yesterday at a northern California school, and police arrested a school janitor in the attack. No children were hurt....

Authorities had locked down the school after the shooting, which occurred in the principal’s office before 11 a.m.

Authorities arrested the school’s janitor, 44-year-old John Luebbers, at his home about an hour after launching a manhunt. Police were investigating the motive for the shooting, including whether Luebbers had been laid off.

“There may have been some kind of dispute between the principal and the custodian,’’ Placerville police Chief George Nielson said. “That’s part of our investigation.’’

One student may have witnessed the shooting, Nielson said....

Police commended the school staff for quickly locking down the school and protecting the children. Students were taken to the county fairground, where they were then released to their parents....

"School district, girl settle in rape case

RICHMOND — Attorneys say a teenage girl who was gang-raped outside a Northern California high school reached a $4 million settlement with the school district. The value of the deal in the civil claim against the West Contra Costa Unified School District was revealed last week. The girl’s attorney, Richard Schoenberger, said district officials agreed it was not in the girl’s best interest to endure depositions or a civil trial. Six people have pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the October 2009 rape."

"Calif. pension system shortfall grows" April 01, 2011|Associated Press

SACRAMENTO — The pension system for California’s teachers has $56 billion less than it needs to cover the benefits promised to its 852,000 members and their families, the fund reported yesterday, as big investment losses in 2008 continue to reverberate....

How can that be when the stock market is roaring?

Bought into mortgage securities, didn't they?

At this rate, the system will run out of money to pay benefits in 2042 unless a long-term fix is worked out, said Ed Derman, the retirement system’s deputy chief executive.

"For Calif. lawmakers, no more free car" April 15, 2011|Associated Press

BURBANK, Calif. — The state will give legislators a flat, $300-a-month payment to offset gas, insurance, and other expenses, more than cutting in half the annual cost to taxpayers....

The Citizens Compensation Commission, voting 5-0 with one abstention, sent a signal that it was time for legislators to surrender a luxury in a state where a car is often a necessity....

The state is struggling to close a $26.6 billion deficit, billions in spending is being slashed, and legislators’ pay and perks are coming under closer scrutiny. Commission member Charles Murray said state lawmakers receive compensation that averages $131,000 annually, not counting retirement. That includes $95,291 in base salary, $5,700 for health care, $7,453 for a vehicle, and nearly $23,000 in additional payments known as per diems, a package far larger than for their counterparts in states like New York, Illinois, or Texas.
