Bahrain Bubbling Up Again

"In Bahrain, riot police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse thousands of opposition supporters near the square that was the epicenter of the nation's Shi'ite-led demonstrations this year, an activist said.

The violence is a setback to efforts by Bahrain's Sunni rulers trying to open reconciliation talks with the Shi'ite opposition.

The renewed unrest - described by witnesses - underlines the deep tensions on the island nation after more than four months of harsh security crackdowns by the Western-allied monarchy.

The protesters gathered near a square in Manama, the capital.
