CANBERRA, Australia - Australia will remove all gender barriers in its military over the next five years, opening up positions that had previously been considered too dangerous for women, including front-line combat roles, a minister said yesterday.
Australia will follow Canada and New Zealand in allowing women who meet physical and psychological criteria to perform any role they choose, Defense Minister Stephen Smith said.

"Light plane crashes into Ferris wheel
SYDNEY - A passenger plane smashed into a Ferris wheel at a festival outside the Australian capital, Canberra, yesterday, trapping a pair of children on the ride and two people in the aircraft, which hung suspended from the top of the ride for hours. The crash caused no serious injuries. The plane, a superlight Cheetah S200 glider, crashed into the ride during poor weather. The pilot said he had not seen the Ferris wheel (New York Times)."
