WASHINGTON - A $13.5 million gift from philanthropist David Rubenstein funded conservation and a new case for the only original Magna Carta in the United States. Rubenstein bought the document at auction in 2007 for $21.3 million and sent it to the National Archives on a long-term loan.
They really do have custody of our historical past -- literally.
Rubenstein, who is cofounder of the private equity firm The Carlyle Group, said he bought the document previously owned by Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot because he wanted to keep it from leaving the country....

As a history buff, Rubenstein, 62, has become somewhat of a specialist on the Magna Carta’s legacy dating to 1215. That is when noblemen came together to declare their rights to King John, including the right to a trial by jury and the first limits on arbitrary taxation that led to the principle of “no taxation without representation.’’
And here we are in 2012 having lost those rights.
“This became something that set the trend of common law’’ in Britain and later in the United States as founding fathers such as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison referred back to Magna Carta, Rubenstein said.

"Ex-engineer helps stop US Archives thefts" May 04, 2012
WASHINGTON - Meticulous record keeping by a retired radio engineer helped uncover a thief ripping off the National Archives, the country’s most important repository of records.
When J. David Goldin saw the recorded interview of baseball great Babe Ruth for sale on eBay he knew something was wrong. There was only one original record of that 1937 interview of Ruth, and Goldin had donated it to a government archive more than 30 years ago. Now someone was auctioning it off, the winning bid just $34.75.
From his home in Sandy Hook, Conn., Goldin looked into the theft and brought it to the attention of authorities. The culprit was the recently retired head of the video and sound branch of the National Archives and Records Administration.
Leslie Charles Waffen, a 40-year employee, has acknowledged stealing thousands of sound recordings from the archive, and prosecutors say more than 1,000 were sold on eBay. Waffen was sentenced by a federal judge in Maryland on Thursday to three years and two months in prison.
The thefts started as early as 2001, and the stolen recordings include items ranging from a recording of the 1948 World Series to an eyewitness report of the Hindenburg crash.
