An 18-year-old Malden man was killed Thursday morning when he tried to run across Route 128 in Newton and was hit by vehicles on both the northbound and southbound lanes of the highway, State Police said.

Reishaun Michael Hopkins was employed by the Honey Dew Donuts shop located in the Newton rest area and was normally scheduled to work the day shift, State Police said....

Before graduating from Malden High School, Hopkins spent three years playing basketball for the Malden Neighborhood Basketball League, where he once set a record for 3-point shots with 41 in a 14-game season, according to league officials.

“He was a great kid,” said Joe Young, his former basketball coach. “He was a hard worker, tried to stay out of trouble the best he could. He loved basketball, was always playing basketball no matter what.”

Hopkins, who was pronounced dead at the scene, landed within sight of the doughnut shop on the southbound side of Route 128, which in that area is also called Interstate 95.

No charges have been filed against the drivers involved, State Police said. The investigation is continuing. During the investigation, State Police closed two lanes, one in each direction, causing major rush hour traffic congestion....
