A Minute For Malaysia

Sorry it's not more, but I'm simply no longer enthused about what my Boston Globe gives us.

"6 police, 7 assailants killed amid Malaysian siege" Associated Press, March 04, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Gunmen ambushed and killed six Malaysian police officers as fears mounted that armed intruders from the southern Philippines had slipped into at least three coastal districts on Borneo island, officials said Sunday.

Six of the attackers were also fatally shot Saturday night, while another was beaten to death by angry villagers, escalating tensions in eastern Sabah state, where Malaysia’s biggest security crisis in recent years began after about 200 members of a Philippine Muslim royal clan occupied a village last month to claim the territory as their own....

The Malaysian and Philippine navies have strengthened their presence in waters near their long sea border with the Philippines that is difficult to patrol, according to Filipino officials....

I'm sorry, but I'm tired of the Islamic insurgents meme and narrative, and who benefits? There comes a point in time where you recognize that sectarianism and Islamic insurgents or what have you are nothing more than covert intelligence operations.

"Malaysia fails to oust Filipino clan" by Sean Yoong  |  Associated Press, March 06, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia unleashed airstrikes and mortar attacks Tuesday on nearly 200 Filipinos occupying a Borneo coastal village but could not declare an immediate end to a three-week siege that has turned into a security nightmare for Malaysia and the Philippines.

The assault follows clashes in the last week that killed eight Malaysian police officers and 19 Filipino gunmen, including members of a Muslim clan that shocked Malaysia and the neighboring Philippines by slipping past naval patrols last month and storming the obscure village in Borneo’s eastern Sabah state.

I'm a bit shocked my self considering the global spying grid.

The clansmen, armed with rifles and grenade launchers, had refused to leave the area, staking a long-dormant claim to Malaysia’s entire state of Sabah, which they insist is their ancestral birthright.

The crisis has sparked worries of a spread of instability in Sabah, which is rich in timber and oil resources. Other armed Filipinos are feared to have slipped into other districts in the area recently....

Yeah, strange how the Islamic "terrorists" are always showing up spots where there is oil and other resources. They should train in Bangladeshi garment factories because there are no resources there and the West isn't even watching.

Anywho....

"Malayasian coalition retains power" Associated Press, May 06, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia’s long-governing coalition won national elections Sunday to extend its 56 years of unbroken rule, fending off the strongest opposition it has ever faced but exposing vulnerabilities in the process.

Gee, I'll bet that terror event with the Philippines distracted a lot of Malaysians.

The Election Commission reported that Prime Minister Najib Razak’s National Front coalition captured 127 of Malaysia’s 222 parliamentary seats to win a majority Sunday. Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s three-party alliance seized 77 seats.

It was the National Front’s 13th consecutive win in general elections since independence from Britain in 1957. It faced its most unified challenge ever from an opposition hoping to capitalize on claims of arrogance, abuse of public funds, and racial discrimination against the government.

Though it retained power, the National Front is weaker than it was at its peak in 2004, when it won 90 percent of the seats in Parliament.

"Signs of trouble in Malaysia’s vote" Associated Press, May 07, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Prime Minister Najib Razak appeared before the media on Monday to acknowledge that his coalition had won general elections for the 13th time in a row, but he sounded more somber than victorious.

The National Front coalition’s victory in Sunday’s parliamentary elections despite losing the popular vote has not only exposed the entrenched racial divide in the country but also a new schism — between the rural poor who preferred the status quo and the urban middle-class who wanted change. \

Huh?

Healing the divisions will be a big challenge for Najib, who took the oath of office Monday to begin his second five-year term after surviving the fiercest challenge to the National Front’s 56-year rule. If left untended, the racial and social divisions could undermine the stability of Southeast Asia’s third-largest economy.

The National Front won 133 seats in the 222-member Parliament — down a fraction from the 135 it held before the elections. The opposition People’s Alliance coalition led by Anwar Ibrahim won 89 seats. But a deeper look at the numbers reveals:

■ The National Front polled 5.24 million votes to the opposition’s 5.62 million votes, according to the Election Commission.

■  The Front banked heavily on three states with rural populations where many people from indigenous groups and the ethnic Malay majority are beholden to the government for handouts. The three states alone accounted for more than half of the 133 seats won.

■  People in many urban areas — especially Chinese who are Malaysia’s second-largest ethnic group — voted overwhelmingly for the opposition, reflecting the huge disenchantment with the government’s affirmative action policies.

Back to the war on terror, 'eh?

"Malaysian forces kill 31 Filipino gunmen" by Floyd Whaley  |  New York Times, March 08, 2013

MANILA — Malaysian security forces killed 31 Filipino gunmen on the island of Borneo, officials said Thursday, and the government rejected calls by the United Nations for an end to the fighting.

At least 60 people, including eight Malaysian police officers, have been killed in the nearly monthlong conflict over an effort by followers of a Philippine-based sultan to assert a historic claim over parts of Borneo Island.

‘‘The secretary-general is closely following the situation in Sabah, Malaysia,’’ said a statement from the United Nations released Wednesday. ‘‘He urges an end to the violence and encourages dialogue among all the parties for a peaceful resolution of the situation.’’

A spokesman for the Jamalul Kiram III, the leader of the group fighting in the Malaysian state of Sabah, said the sultanate was declaring a unilateral cease-fire in reaction to the call by the United Nations. He said an order was given for the group to take a ‘‘defensive position’’ and not to engage Malaysian troops.

The Malaysian defense minister, Ahmad Zahid, rejected the calls by the United Nations and the sultanate.

‘‘A unilateral cease-fire is not accepted by Malaysia unless the militants surrender unconditionally,’’ he said in a statement, adding later: ‘‘Don’t believe the cease-fire offer by Jamalul Kiram. In the interest of Sabahans and all Malaysians, wipe out all the militants first.’’

Prime Minister Najib Razak of Malaysia told reporters Thursday afternoon that Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III had telephoned him after the UN statement to get his reaction.

“I informed President Aquino that they need to surrender unconditionally and their weapons have to be handed over to us,’’ he said during a visit to Lahad Datu, the area where much of the fighting has taken place.

"Malaysia detains 3 on terror charges" by Sean Yoong |  Associated Press, February 08, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Police detained three people Thursday, including a former army captain linked to two hijackers in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, on suspicion of recruiting militants for terrorist activities.

Yeah, except it turns out Muslims didn't do 9/11Israel and her helpers in various western governments and intelligence agencies did.

The detentions are believed to be the first under Malaysia’s Security Offenses Act, which was introduced last year to replace a law that allowed indefinite detention without trial.

The two men and a woman were detained on suspicion they led efforts ‘‘to recruit several Malaysians for terrorist activities,’’ said national police Chief Ismail Omar.

He said in a statement that an investigation is continuing. Other police officials said they could not elaborate.

The statement did not identify the suspects. However, human rights group Suaram said they include Yazid Sufaat, a former Malaysian army captain who spent seven years in detention without trial after being accused of belonging to Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian militant network. He was freed in 2008 when officials said he no longer posed a threat.

Was he also on the CIA payroll?

The security act enables police to hold suspects for up to 28 days before they must be brought to court.

UPDATE:

"Malaysia says it killed invasion leader" by Manirajan Ramasamy and Chong Pooi Koon |  Bloomberg News, March 13, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysian forces say they killed a top commander of a Muslim armed group from the Philippines that invaded Sabah, a claim disputed by the clan as violence continued in the monthlong struggle over ownership of the commodities-rich state....

The incursion has been a distraction for Prime Minister Najib Razak as he prepares for polls that will determine whether his National Front coalition can extend its 55-year grip on power. He will probably dissolve Parliament by the end of this month for elections after raising civil servants’ salaries, analysts including Ibrahim Suffian said.

‘‘Najib has gotten a boost through his handling of the insurgency,’’ Ibrahim, an analyst at the Merdeka Center for Opinion Research, said Tuesday in a phone interview. ‘‘It has increased patriotism in the country. At the same time, pay rises will help secure a traditional base of support among civil servants and their families.’’

I see who was behind it all now. Who benefited?
