Was Norfolk DA Texting While Driving?

No one is asking the question, so I thought I would ask it:

"Norfolk DA Morrissey crossed center line before car crash" by Travis Andersen and John R. Ellement |  Globe Staff, July 17, 2013

MILTON — Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey’s vehicle crossed into the opposite lane and collided with two other vehicles in an accident here on Tuesday that left four people injured, including the prosecutor and a child, authorities said.

The disclosure by officials on Wednesday was one of the details that began to emerge about the crash that sent all four of the injured occupants to area hospitals.

Milton Deputy Police Chief John E. King said in a statement that Morrissey, of Quincy, was driving home from his Canton office when his vehicle crossed the traffic divider lines on Centre Street shortly before 6 p.m.

“For some unknown reason, he crossed the double yellow lines and collided with two other vehicles in the westbound lane,” King said. “A fourth vehicle swerved to avoid the collision and went off the roadway. Four individuals were transported to area hospitals.”

King said two drivers were cited for motor vehicle infractions, but he refused to elaborate....

His wife, Joanne, said in a brief phone interview Wednesday evening that Morrissey had been released from the hospital and had returned home. She said he was sleeping when a reporter called and that she was not sure if police had cited him.

“Given his position and his desire to reassure the community, he requested alcohol testing,” she said in a separate, written statement. “As he fully expected, the test confirmed that no alcohol was present in his system. Further, witnesses at the scene have indicated that speed was not a factor.”

That leaves my question out there, and it would really look bad what with the law against it and stuff.

"Norfolk DA says he suffered ‘medical episode’ before crash" by Stephanie Ebbert and Javier Panzar |  Globe Staff and Globe Correspondent, July 18, 2013

Two days after he caused a four-car crash in a car leased by the state, Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey released a statement explaining that he had suffered a “medical episode” and lost consciousness before his car veered into an oncoming lane of traffic in Milton.

Okay, maybe, it's possible, I don't know.

Remember what we are dealing with here: a mouthpiece for authority.

“Fatigue, dehydration, and extreme temperatures contributed to my loss of consciousness,” Morrissey said in a statement issued Thursday. “On my doctor’s advice, I plan to take some time off to recuperate.”

Okay, it's possible, but blaming global warming....

The police have said there was no indication that alcohol was a factor. Morrissey said that the Milton Police Department issued him a citation and that he expects a hearing will be held shortly to determine any criminal liability.

He also said that he intends “to be as transparent as possible in this process.”

But the circumstances surrounding the crash remained unclear, with Morrissey, his family, and Milton Police skirting questions from reporters.

Just being transparent, Globe!

A woman at Morrissey’s Quincy home would speak to a reporter only from behind a closed door, saying that the statement would be forthcoming. Later in the day, a family friend opened the door, but said Morrissey was in bed.

The pre$$ usually takes offense to such things, and they do you no favor in their coverage.

Milton Deputy Police Chief John E. King, who provided basic information about the accident Wednesday, was unavailable Thursday. No one else in the department would answer questions in his absence.

Strange.

The Globe e-mailed King a public records request Thursday, and he swiftly responded: “Your request will be reviewed in the near future.” But he did not respond to questions about the crash....

But Morrisey certainly gave out lots of other information.

Maybe it is as reported, maybe it is; however, after all I've seen and read over these past few decades.... the truth may never be known, and I truly thank God no one was killed.

UPDATE:

Norfolk DA Michael Morrissey still out of work after accident
Norfolk DA returning to work next week

Police have said there was no indication that alcohol or texting were factors in the crash.

Imagine my surprise.

"Karen Blau, 46, faces charges of motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence of liquor and drugs, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a marked lanes violation, the Norfolk district attorney’s office said in a statement."

The DA got lucky no one was killed.

UPDATE:

"Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey was cleared of criminal wrongdoing for his role in a July 16 four-car crash in Milton that sent him and three others to hospitals, but the Quincy Democrat was ordered to pay a $100 civil fine for a marked lanes violation. Morrissey, who was at Quincy District Court for a closed-door hearing before a clerk-magistrate Monday morning, released a variety of records to show that he fainted and was not inebriated or distracted by his phone when the crash occurred."
