Sunday Globe Special: Hell of a Halloween

I'm slowly starting to remember what happened:

"Authorities are looking for a man who struck and killed three girls in a residential area of Santa Ana while speeding on Halloween. The AP reports the 13-years-old girls, two of whom were twins, had the right of way at a crosswalk near an elementary school in Santa Ana about 6:45 p.m. PDT when they were hit by a speeding SUV with two men inside. According to Orange County fire Captain Steve Concialdi, two of the girls were declared dead immediately. The third died while being prepared to be taken to the hospital."

Globe forgot that printed gossip I guess.

"5 killed in Portland apartment fire" by Patrick Whittle | Associated Press   November 02, 2014

PORTLAND, Maine — Fire swept through a two-apartment building near the University of Southern Maine’s commuter campus Saturday morning, killing five people and critically injuring one, authorities said.

The fire, which gutted the two-story structure, was reported at 7:17 a.m., following a Halloween party the night before.

Information about the victims was conflicting. Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state fire marshal’s office, initially said the victims were students, but later said they were not. Saturday afternoon, Portland Fire Chief Jerry LaMoria said officials do not know if any were students. Early reports said several people were unaccounted for, but later in the day, authorities were unsure how many, if any, were still missing.

One person suffered severe burns and jumped from a second-story window. He was reported in critical condition in the burn unit of a Boston hospital, McCausland said. A second person was treated and released from a hospital; seven people escaped.

Two bodies were found on the second floor and three on the third floor. From the outside, a side of the building was severely damaged by flames.

Nathan Long, who said he woke up to the smell of smoke when his alarm clock went off, told the Portland Press Herald that he didn’t hear any fire alarms going off. He yelled ‘‘fire!’’ and ran to the back of the house, where another person was opening a window. They both jumped onto a porch roof, then to the ground, where he saw the badly burned body of another person.

‘‘I feel pretty lucky. I'm kind of numb,’’ Long told the newspaper.

The neighborhood is a residential area of single- and multi-family homes.

"Revere fire captain arrested on charges of assaulting child" by Jennifer Smith | Globe Correspondent   November 01, 2014

A Revere fire captain was arrested Friday night for charges of assault and battery on a child after an altercation with youths trick-or-treating in his neighborhood, officials said.

Time to ban this beggaring, expect a handout holiday. Turning this whole country into little bankers with a tinge of Zionist entitlement.

Carl Holmberg, 44, was arrested on three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of assault and battery on a child with injury, police said. The injuries were not life threatening, officials said.

The incident occurred when “all parties” were out for Halloween trick-or-treating, Revere police Lieutenant Amy O’Hara said in a statement. Holmberg was with his young child at the time, O’Hara said.

He was arrested between 8 and 9 p.m. Friday in the neighborhood where his family lives, and where the altercation took place, said Revere Fire Chief Gene Doherty.

Holmberg allegedly got into a “confrontation with a group of youths, which escalated,” said Doherty. The youths have not been identified due to their ages, O’Hara said.

Calls to Holmberg’s home were not returned.

Holmberg has 15 years of service with the department and no prior problems, said O’Hara. He made captain within the past year, Doherty said.

Holmberg has been suspended with pay pending a disciplinary hearing. After Holmberg’s arraignment, Doherty said, the Fire Department will decide how to address the issue.

“It’s obviously a very serious matter,” Doherty said.

He won't be able to put out this fire.

"A man killed himself on Saturday after multiple devices exploded in his Meadow Street apartment, where he had barricaded himself inside, prompting police to evacuate neighbors, authorities said. According to State Police spokesman David Procopio, the State Police bomb squad and SWAT team were at the scene, along with Salem police officers."

Another victim of this wonderful economy.
