Don't Take the Tappen Zee

"Cheaper Tappan Zee Bridge project proposed; $9.3b plan defers commuter rail to second phase" by Jim Fitzgerald, Associated Press | September 27, 2008

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - The Tappan Zee Bridge has to be replaced, but doing it right would mean including a commuter rail line and spending about $16 billion, state planners said.

State authorities said they do not yet know where the money might come from, but they are exploring alternative financing, including private investment. They also expressed hope that federal funds would be available.

Ha!! Where they gonna get it from after TABBING TRILLIONS for WARS and BANKS!?

The Tappan Zee, which transformed the northern suburbs when it opened, is under continual repair. In July, a crater 3 1/2 feet wide opened up in the roadbed, making the Hudson River visible below. It is overcrowded, carrying 150,000 vehicles a day. It has no shoulders, so any breakdown causes huge traffic jams.

Officials said mass transit is an integral part of the plan. Moving people, not vehicles, is our goal," said Howard Permut, president of the Metro-North Railroad.

Moving them to where?
