JERUSALEM - Israeli troops stepped up attacks on Hamas fighters in the outskirts of Gaza City yesterday as the death toll of Palestinians in recent fighting surpassed 900....
In a televised statement from a hide-out presumed to be in Gaza, a top leader of the battered Hamas regime mixed defiance with language suggesting openness to diplomacy. Ismail Haniyeh, who served as prime minister under a previous Palestinian unity government, looked weary and cited Koranic verses and prayers during the speech....
The Israeli onslaught has caused an increasing number of Hamas combatants to give up the fight and melt into the population, while others hole up in complexes of subterranean bunkers, according to Israeli security officials. Top Hamas figures are hiding in a bunker underneath a Gaza City hospital because they believe Israel will not bomb the medical facility, the officials said....

In fighting yesterday, Israeli troops moved into the northern and southern outskirts of battered Gaza City, according to UN officials and witnesses. But the military refrained from driving into the center of the city, where close-quarters combat would further endanger civilians.

Aerial bombardment, artillery barrages, and firing from naval vessels continued, targeting the Tuffah neighborhood in the north of Gaza, UN officials said. Israeli aircraft hit 25 targets, including eight squads of armed militants, Israeli military officials said.
In one clash yesterday, Israeli soldiers exchanged fire with Hamas fighters barricaded in a mosque and later found a stockpile of rockets and mortar shells at the site, according to Israeli military officials.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported yesterday that the death toll had risen from 884 to 910, according to an update from UN officials in Gaza. The dead include 292 children and 75 women, the officials said. Israel's death toll was 13, three of them civilians killed by Hamas rockets.
Despite the Israeli aerial and ground assault, Hamas fighters fired at least 20 rockets into southern Israel, striking a house in Ashkelon, Israeli authorities said. There were no casualties.You know, I'm really starting to wonder about that rocket fire.

GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli tanks rolled into densely populated parts of the city of Gaza on Tuesday and troops fought intense battles with Hamas militants as world leaders struggled to coax the sides into a ceasefire.
Hamas said its forces detonated explosives beneath Israeli armor and fought with Israeli forces backed by helicopter gunships and naval fire in what appeared to be the most ferocious fighting since Israel sent ground troops into Gaza 10 days ago.
Explosions and the din of heavy machine gun fire echoed continuously through the Hamas-ruled territory's largest city before dawn. Flashes of light lit up the skies....
Israel pressed on with its offensive, sending its tanks into built-up areas in the city of Gaza, the deepest thrust since the attack began. Israeli military spokesman Brigadier General Avi Benayahu said on Monday Israel was "deeper in the territory." Reserve units had moved in to free up regular troops for the push into the city.
