Soccer Sunday: Sudanese Shootout

Seeing as the World Cup championship is later this afternoon/evening I'll post articles from the host continent.

CAIRO — More than two dozen gunmen attacked Rwandan peacekeepers yesterday in the ravaged Darfur region of Sudan, killing three of them in an hourlong firefight, a spokesman for the international mission said.

Looks like the U.N is going to be busy.

The peacekeepers were providing security as the joint United Nations-African Union mission built a base in West Darfur’s Jebel Marra region, a major rebel stronghold where the government has made inroads recently.

The estimated 25 assailants arrived piled into a four-wheel-drive vehicle and attacked the peacekeepers, killing three and losing three of their own....

The UN estimates that some 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million have been displaced since ethnic African tribesman in the vast arid western Darfur region took up arms against the Arab-dominated central government.

The administration says those figures are exaggerated.
