Accused Craigslist killer Philip Markoff, charged with killing a New York masseuse in a Back Bay hotel room last year, was found dead in his jail cell yesterday morning, a plastic bag tied over his head in an apparent suicide, two law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation said yesterday.
Another law enforcement official said Markoff also had a cut to one of his arteries. Details were not available.
Markoff, 24, who had been a promising medical student and was engaged to marry his college sweetheart at the time of his arrest, was alone in his cell when jail officials discovered his body a day after what would have been the one-year anniversary of his canceled wedding.
The apparent suicide caps a case that attracted national attention because of the brutality of the crime in a luxurious Boston hotel and the double life Markoff appeared to lead....

Philip Markoff’s boy-next-door image masked a sordid, secret life, prosecutors said, a predatory existence in the seamy underworld of online prostitution, attacking and robbing women he met through Craigslist in apparent support of a gambling habit.

Yesterday, almost exactly one year after his scheduled wedding day, his life came to a wretched end in a jail cell.

In the days and weeks following Markoff’s arrest in the slaying of Julissa Brisman, a 25-year-old erotic masseuse, details of his double life stunned his friends and family.
Prosecutors said Markoff chose women whom he could dominate and abuse and who were unlikely to report robberies to police.
Before his arrest, Markoff appeared to have it all. A promising doctor-in-training planning a storybook wedding to his doting college sweetheart, the tall, blond 23-year-old was the picture of youthful ambition, a small-town boy made good.
In the aftermath of Markoff’s arrest, some friends and family spoke in his defense, as did his fiancée, Megan McAllister, who described him as a “beautiful person inside and out’’ who “would not hurt a fly.’’ Many insisted that the police must have made a mistake.
But as evidence mounted against Markoff, whom McAllister had met at the State University of New York at Albany, she canceled the wedding, and some who knew Markoff said he had shown troubling signs....
College friends describe Markoff as a driven overachiever who often seemed ill at ease, despite his accomplishments. He was wound tight, treating casual poker games as fierce competitions and becoming bitter when he lost, they said.
After logging long hours in the library or lab, he partied with intensity. More conservative than his classmates, he went out of his way to debate politics, aggressively voicing his support for gun rights or the war in Iraq....

But, in some ways, Markoff came into his own in college, gaining confidence and finding a niche in medicine....

Yes, he was a brilliant prosepective murderer as a boy.
In high school yearbook pictures, he is shown smiling, his hair neat and cleanly parted. He played golf and excelled on the bowling team. In one championship victory, he was described in a local newspaper as the “picture of consistency.’’

Philip Markoff’s apparent suicide yesterday in a Boston jail comes at a time of increasing scrutiny on suicides in the state’s prisons and occurred just weeks after the federal immigration agency faulted Suffolk County jail officials on their failure to properly care for an immigrant detainee who died.

The death of an inmate who had been placed on suicide watch last year because of a previous attempt to kill himself is also expected to raise questions about precautions taken by Suffolk County jail officials. They refused yesterday to release details of Markoff’s death or to say how frequently they were monitoring him, but they did say he was not on suicide watch at the time of his death....
Why not?
Markoff had been placed on suicide watch at the jail in April 2009. He was examined by medical staff at the jail and placed in a special cell with a camera trained on him after a correction officer saw marks on his neck that suggested he had tried to use shoelaces to hang himself, a law enforcement official told the Globe at the time.
Lindsay Hayes of Mansfield, project director for the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives who was hired last month by the Patrick administration to look into the state’s prisons, said that it would be unusual to keep an inmate on continuous suicide watch.
Even then, however, Hayes said, he would be surprised if officers were not checking on Markoff at least every half-hour.
“It’s kind of a nightmare for any sheriff when any high-profile inmate dies in their jail,’’ Hayes said. “They normally take precautions to make sure these people are treated a little differently, given a little more scrutiny than your average inmate.’’
Yup, some people get special treatment in Amerika's jails and others get tortured for no reason and abandoned forever.
Boston criminal defense attorney Randolph Gioia, who has frequently visited clients at the Nashua Street Jail, said there is a lot of security in each unit.
“I think it’s impossible to watch everybody 24-7,’’ Gioia said.
Then what is with the round-the-clock, three-shifts-a-day-s*** with the cameras?

Suicides in Massachusetts state prisons are occurring at a rate more than four times the national average this year, prompting advocates and inmates’ relatives to call for an urgent response from state officials — and spurring the Patrick administration yesterday to hire a suicide prevention specialist.

With the discovery of an eighth inmate found hanging in his cell at Old Colony Correctional Center in Bridgewater yesterday morning, Massachusetts prisons have reached a suicide rate of about 71 per 100,000 inmates so far this year, more than quadruple the average annual national rate of 16 per 100,000 inmates reported by the US Bureau for Justice Statistics.
Even if no additional inmates commit suicide this year, the eight deaths to date match the highest annual total in the past 14 years, according to Department of Correction statistics.

“To hear that so many people have committed suicide, it just boggles my mind,’’ said Antonia Chasse, of Westfield, whose brother, Ramon DeJesus, a 58-year-old convicted murderer, was found hanging in his cell on June 2 at MCI-Norfolk. “This is a place where individuals are being watched 24 hours a day.’’
