"Trash problem shuts down Maine beach
The town manager in Raymond, Maine, says the local beach on Sebago Lake will be closed for the rest of the summer because too much trash is being left behind. Don Willard tells the Portland Press Herald that the waste includes hypodermic needles, used condoms, dog feces, and bottles and beer cans.
Watch where you put that towel down.
The beach was closed on July 7 after town officials found elevated levels of E. coli bacteria in the water. It was reopened the next day and since then, water quality tests have been satisfactory.
Says who?
Raymond selectmen are expected to consider a plan to better manage the beach or close it permanently."
Good idea!
"Scientists study coast for invasive species
A team of 25 scientists surveying the region’s coast for invasive pests is documenting the growing problem of sea squirts and a newcomer, red alga, that has been spreading in southern New England.
Seen any turds floating by?
The scientists wrapped up their weeklong survey yesterday by inspecting a cove and two marinas in Cape Elizabeth, South Portland, and Freeport. Earlier in the week, the team visited sites in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The goal is to develop an inventory of marine animals and plants living where they do not naturally occur and determine if they pose threats to native organisms (AP)."
