"Obamas’ first day on Vineyard low key; Visits bookstore, plays round of golf" by Mark Arsenault, Globe Staff | August 21, 2010

VINEYARD HAVEN — President Obama left the job of announcing significant diplomatic progress in the Middle East to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton yesterday, spending his first full day on Martha’s Vineyard shopping for books with his children and joining a foursome for 18 holes of golf at a private club....

He limited himself to just one brief foray in public — a stop with daughters Sasha and Malia at Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven. Security officers blocked off Main Street while the president was inside, and hundreds of people gathered behind yellow police tape to see the Obamas, according to pool reports.

The president, wearing jeans, a polo shirt and a Chicago White Sox cap, left the store with two brown bags of books....

Who cares?

A regular golfer, Obama played yesterday at Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown, where he also played last year. He was joined by Eric Whitaker, a Chicago friend of the president; US Representative James Clyburn, a Democrat from South Carolina and the House majority whip; and Marvin Nicholson, the White House trip director, who is a former golf caddy and a former aide to Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts.

Though the president is taking some time off, his staff is still taking every opportunity to drive home the president’s message that Obama’s economic policies rescued the country from a depression....

Homeland Security Adviser John Brennan, gave Obama a daily security briefing.

Brennan told reporters he has “immediate access’’ to the president during vacation in case of a national security emergency. “So if there were to be some type of event that would require immediate engagement with the president, I am certain I can do it as quickly as I could do back in Washington,’’ he said....

Yeah, there better not be another "terror" attack.

Fool me once....

"Obamas stick with low-key approach to Vineyard vacation

EDGARTOWN — President Obama, his wife, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha spent 4 1/2 hours yesterday at a private beach enjoying a picnic lunch....

The family was not seen by the White House press corps as they headed for the beach, but clusters of well-wishers waved to them as they passed a bustling farmer’s market and several crowded intersections en route. There was a similar scene as their now-dusty vehicles returned home....

"A low-key visitor: Obama turns Vineyard into isle of seclusion" by Mark Arsenault, Globe Staff | August 23, 2010

TISBURY — Thus far, the vacationing president and his family have stayed mostly out of view, which political specialists say reflects a justifiable demand for privacy combined with White House concern about negative political fallout if the president is shown enjoying a privileged retreat during hard economic times....

In an age when a picture of the president’s bare chest and even the way he sips a beer on the campaign trail are picked apart and graded for political style in a relentless media environment, the White House is clearly paying attention to what political operatives these days are calling the “optics’’ of the presidency.

“The White House will be sensitive about the president being seen doing things that look opulent or over the top,’’ said Democratic political consultant Chris Lehane, a former spokesman for President Clinton and for Vice President Al Gore. “People do extrapolate from these things.’’

Just this month, Michelle Obama was excoriated by conservative critics as well as some liberal pundits for her trip to Spain with Sasha, while unemployment at home is 9.5 percent and fears are rising of a double-dip recession....

No, no, I was told Obama fixed all that.

"Obama beats the rain by hitting the court

CHILMARK — President Obama joined some friends and colleagues, including Chicago pal Eric Whitaker and banker Robert Wolf of UBS, for a private game of hoops at Oak Bluffs Elementary School, said Bill Bruton, deputy press secretary....

The Obamas spent most of the morning at Blue Heron Farm, where the president has been watching movies with his family and playing poker with Whitaker over the past few days, Bruton said....

Obama and his wife went out for dinner for the first time on their vacation, choosing The Sweet Life Café, a French-American restaurant in Oak Bluffs....

As if we cared about any of that s***.
