Marzilli Down the Memory Hole

That's where I'm putting him:

"Marzilli given 3-month jail sentence; Former senator admits harassment" February 23, 2011|Milton J. Valencia, Globe Staff

LOWELL — With a judge saying he broke the community’s confidence in government, former state senator J. James Marzilli Jr. was sentenced to three months in a county jail yesterday and taken from a courtroom in handcuffs while his wife and family members watched.

All by himself?  I don't think so.

Marzilli, 53, who represented Arlington in public office for 20 years, showed no emotion after pleading guilty in Lowell Superior Court to four counts of accosting a person of the opposite sex, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

Marzilli admitted to harassing four women with sexually explicit remarks in downtown Lowell on June 3, 2008, and then fleeing police and resisting arrest, during an hours-long binge that rocked his political career. He did not seek reelection the following fall and eventually resigned. He has since said that mental illness — he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder — played a role in his thinking that day and that he has been receiving treatment.

That's the best excuse he could come up with?

During yesterday’s hearing, Superior Court Judge Paul Chernoff said that even though Marzilli has no criminal history and he was not accused of hurting anyone physically, sending him to jail was the only proper way to “reinforce the mores of the community.’’

Well, aside from the politics.
