Uganda's Unknown Protests

Aren't they a U.S. ally?

"CLASH IN UGANDA -- People celebrating the return of Uganda's leading opposition figure, Kizza Besigye, were dispersed in Kampala yesterday by government forces. Besigye had been in Kenya after being wounded in a recent arrest. President Yoweri Museveni vowed to stamp out "disrupting schemes" as he was sworn in for a fourth term (Boston Globe May 13 2011)."

KAMPALA, Uganda — Police arrested Uganda’s top opposition leader yesterday to prevent what authorities said could be a destructive protest march....

Uganda has seen sharp spikes in food and fuel prices the last several months, making car or bus travel unaffordable for many. Anger over the increases has fueled protests, and security forces have clashed with protesters around the country.
