"Acquittal, mistrial in Edwards case; Found not guilty on one count, mistrial called on remaining five" by Manuel Roig-Franzia | Washington Post, June 01, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. - John Edwards, a North Carolina lawyer who parlayed boyish good looks and an inspiring personal history as the son of a mill worker into a quick political rise, was acquitted of one count of political corruption Thursday, with the judge declaring a mistrial on five other charges on which the jury was deadlocked.
The mixed result in a trial that laid bare Edwards’s sexual
indiscretions and serial deceptions came after nine days of jury
deliberations complicated by the unusual courtroom antics of alternate
jurors, who distracted the audience by wearing color-coordinated outfits
and giggling....
“To pick this kind of case and spend tens of millions of dollars to prosecute a failed presidential candidate just doesn’t make any sense to me,’’ former Federal Elections Commission chairman Michael Toner said. “I’m not a fan of John Edwards or his underlying conduct, but I never thought it was a violation of the federal election laws, let alone a criminal violation.’’
Hey, they can't prosecute anything really important so they have to focus on diversionary and distracting s***.
Yeah, I guess the Justice Department is too busy suing Arizona, investigating in Seattle and Montana, and running guns to Mexican gangs to look into Kent State, JFK, 9/11, the Wall Street frauds, Oklahoma City, first WTC bombing, etc, etc, etc. I guess when you have had a hand in such things it makes it tough to investigate.
And then they "botch" things like the Stevens and Blackwater trials?
Campaign finance lawyer Brett Kappel said the verdict was no surprise because “it was a difficult legal theory to prove. The Federal Election Commission had taken the position that the allegations didn’t even amount to a civil violation.’’
