"Yemeni authorities foil attacks on foreigners" July 02, 2012

SANA, Yemen — A top Yemeni security official said Sunday that authorities have uncovered at least 13 Al Qaeda plots targeting foreign diplomats, embassies, and senior military and government officials in the capital of Sana and other cities.

You will have to excuse me readers.

The official said authorities were tipped off by captured Al Qaeda members. He said they gave information about sleeper cells plotting a string of assassinations, bombings, and abductions of foreign diplomats in the capital, as well as cities in troubled southern Yemen. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

Al Qaeda is trying to hit back after a two-month Yemeni military offensive drove the militants out of several main strongholds in the south.

Al Qaeda took advantage of internal turmoil and a security vacuum to capture parts of southern Yemen....

"US to increase military aid to Yemen" Washington Post, July 20, 2012

WASHINGTON — In the latest sign of Washington’s deepening involvement in Yemen’s battle against an Al Qaeda affiliate, the US military is preparing to give over $100 million in counterterrorism and security aid to the Arabian country this year, according to newly obtained documents.

This in a time of austerity at home. And newly obtained documents means the government handed them a press release.

The Obama administration notified Congress last month that it intends to resume military aid to Yemen....

Doesn't Congress get to say where the money goes?

"So, kids in Yemen are starving, and what does the US aid package consist of this year?!?

Why, bombs, bullets, military training, and aircraft, of course!! THAT ought to keep those starving brats quiet, in the view of the White House, Pentagon, and State Department!!

The Pentagon is pouring new funding into Yemen for weapons and aircraft to help bolster the embattled country’s counterterrorism forces, amid growing concerns about Iranian spying and meddling there. After freezing military aid to Yemen for the past year, as the country was wracked by internal chaos, the Defense Department has agreed to deliver more than $112 million worth of equipment and military training this year. The assistance includes $75 million approved last month and $37.4 million this month. In documents delivered to Congress, the Pentagon said the latest funding will be used to buy two new twin-engine transport planes, inflatable boats, communications equipment and a variety of guns and ammunition. The $75 million was targeted for counterterrorism improvements, including small unmanned aircraft known as drones, weapons, military construction and training.

And folks, this has nothing to do with Iran, and everything to do with Yemen's oil-producing neighbor, Saudi Arabia, which has been experiencing unrest of its own.

The scenario the US and Israel do not want to see unfolding is Saudi oil going off-market due to riots or demonstrations at the time the US and/or Israel is contemplating a military strike against Iran."-- Wake the Flock Up
