"‘Suspicious device’ detonated at Babson by authorities" by John R. Ellement | Globe Staff, January 24, 2014
A suspicious device found this morning at Babson College was destroyed in a controlled detonation by State Police bomb technicians at 10:57 a.m., college officials said.
That opens old wounds.
There was no damage, and the area has been deemed clear of any threat, Babson spokesman Michael Chmura said in a statement.
He said the bomb squad acted out of “an abundance of caution.”
He had no comment on whether the device was actually a bomb. He said the college was cooperating in an investigation of the device, which was discovered at about 7:10 a.m. near the Babson Executive Conference Center.
Wellesley Deputy Police Chief Jack Pilecki said in a telephone interview today that the object was “what appears to be a pipe with a piece of small copper tubing coming out of the top and what looks like to be a rubber base to it.’’
After the object was found by Babson public safety officials, Wellesley police and firefighters and State Police responded and a portion of the center was evacuated.
