A Boston man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge of being an armed career criminal after police allegedly found him carrying a loaded gun in Roxbury Monday afternoon.

During his arraignment in Roxbury District Court, Ricky Norwood, 33, also pleaded not guilty to charges of carrying a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and possession of a large-capacity ammunition feeding device, police said.

He was being held in lieu of $30,000 bail and is scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing May 28.

A Boston police said officers conducting an investigation saw Norwood walk into a McDonald’s restaurant on Warren Street carrying a camouflage-style backpack.

When he saw officers follow him into the restaurant, Norwood attempted to leave through a side door, police said, but found himself confronted by additional officers positioned there.

After a brief struggle, Norwood was arrested.

A search of his backpack allegedly revealed a Ruger pistol that was loaded with 12 bullets, officials said.
