Five people were arrested following a late-night raid by the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team on an Atlanta apartment.

During the abduction, the kidnappers took a picture of Frank Arthur Janssen tied up in a chair and sent it to his wife, threatening to torture and dismember him if she went to police, according to court documents.

John Strong, the FBI’s agent in charge for North Carolina, said Janssen’s kidnapping was related to his daughter’s prosecution of Kelvin Melton, who is serving a life sentence for ordering the shooting of a man in 2011. Melton, 49, was convicted of being a habitual felon, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

According to the complaint, Melton had a mobile phone in his prison cell and was in constant contact with the alleged kidnappers. Officials closed in on the suspects by tracking their cellphones and listening to their calls.

Court documents said a woman knocked on Janssen’s door Saturday at his Wake Forest home. Several people assaulted him and someone used a stun gun. He was then driven to Atlanta and his wife reported him missing.

On Monday, she started receiving a series of text messages from a phone in Georgia. The messages made specific demands for the benefit of Melton, an inmate at Polk Correctional Institution.

"Marine’s death may have been accident" Associated Press   April 10, 2014

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A Pentagon spokesman said Wednesday that the fatal shooting of a Marine on guard duty by a colleague at a North Carolina base appears to have been an accident.

Indications point to a ‘‘negligent discharge’’ as the cause of Tuesday’s death in a guard shack at the main gate to Camp Lejeune, Army Colonel Steven Warren, a Department of Defense spokesman, told reporters.

‘‘It appears right now to have been an accident,’’ Warren said.

But it will take several weeks of examination to confirm that the shooting was accidental, base spokesman Nat Fahy said in a statement.

The Marine who fired the single shot from his M4 rifle about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday remains in custody while the Naval Criminal Investigative Service reviews the incident. He has not been identified.

The victim was shot once in the chest. Emergency personnel attempted to revive the wounded Marine, but the person was later pronounced dead at a base hospital.

The victim’s name will not be made public until at least 24 hours after next-of-kin are notified of the death.

The guard shack at the gate is about 15 feet by 15 feet and sits under a canopy.

"Charlotte mayor facing corruption charges" Associated Press   March 27, 2014

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A city spokesman says Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon has resigned effective immediately just hours after he was charged with federal public corruption and bribery.

Keith Richardson says Cannon submitted his letter Wednesday to the city manager and attorney.

The 47-year-old Cannon is accused of accepting more than $48,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen who wanted to do work with North Carolina’s largest city.

Keeps the FBI employed, all this entrapment.

A criminal complaint from the US attorney says the Democrat, who has been mayor for six months, accepted cash, airline tickets, a hotel room, and the use of a luxury apartment as bribes and solicited more than $1 million more.

How disappointing! I expect that out of Republicans!

Cannon says in the letter that the pending charges will create too much of a distraction for the business of the city to go forward.

He is charged with bribery and public corruption.
