"Middleborough driver charged in fatal Wareham crash; Onset man, 24, in wheelchair struck, killed" by Alyssa Creamer | Globe Correspondent May 24, 2014
A Middleborough man is being held without bail on multiple charges, including drunken driving, after allegedly striking and killing a 24-year-old Onset man in a wheelchair early Saturday morning, according to Wareham police.
The driver, John Vandeusen, 28, has been charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol, Bridget Norton Middleton, a spokeswoman for the Plymouth district attorney’s office, said in a phone interview Saturday.
Police said in the statement that Vandeusen was driving a pickup truck on Onset Avenue, near Aunt Hannah’s Lane, in Wareham when the vehicle struck Joshua Macro around 1 a.m. Saturday. Macro was taken to Tobey Hospital in Wareham, where he later died of his injuries, the statement said.
Vandeusen has also been charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stay in marked lanes, Kevin Walsh, Wareham’s interim chief of police, said in a statement.
State Police assigned to the Plymouth district attorney’s office, as well as Wareham police and an accident reconstruction team, continue to investigate the crash, according to the statement. No other information was immediately available.
Vandeusen is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning at Wareham District Court.
