"Buyer of Nobel medal says he will return it to prize winner" New York Times  December 10, 2014

A Russian entrepreneur and philanthropist revealed on Tuesday that he was the winning bidder at the auction of James D. Watson’s 1962 Nobel Prize last week and that he planned to return the medal to Watson — “the person who deserved it.”

The Nobel was awarded to Watson, now 86, and two colleagues, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins, for their discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA.

The buyer, Alisher Usmanov, who lives in Moscow, announced through the London public relations firm Finsbury that he was the anonymous telephone bidder who paid $4.1 million for the gold medal on Thursday at a Christie’s auction.

Forbes lists Usmanov as the richest man in Russia, with a net worth of $15.8 billion.

In a statement, Usmanov indicated that he was distressed that Watson was selling the medal in order to give much of the proceeds to charity.

"The protestors represented people from around the city and different backgrounds. Similar demonstrations took place across the country, including in Washington, D.C., according to the Associated Press. There was a visible law enforcement presence throughout the demonstration’s progress through the city, with State Police and Boston officers using barricades at several points to keep protesters away from highways. The march was mostly peaceful, with many protesters bringing young children to participate."

N.Y. police open inquiry into chokehold case

The closed-door viewing marked the start of the New York Police Department’s internal affairs inquiry to determine whether Officer Daniel Pantaleo and at least six other officers will be disciplined for their roles in Eric Garner’s July 17 arrest and death on Staten Island. The internal inquiry was on hold pending the outcome of a grand jury investigation.

"Family members of young, unarmed black men killed by police packed a stage in front of the US Capitol on Saturday. The march in Washington coincided with protest marches across the country. Organizers had predicted 5,000 people at the Washington march, but the crowd appeared to far outnumber that. Joining the Garners in Washington were speakers from the family of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old killed in Ohio as he played with a pellet gun in a park, and the Rev. Al Sharpton, who helped organize the marches."

A ‘‘history-making moment’’ -- and now we know these are nothing but controlled-opposition driven by government.

Of course, the totals for Occupy Wall Street and the antiwar crowds were always downplayed (another tell of a propaganda effort).

"Union says Cleveland police not told boy’s gun might be a toy" Associated Press  December 13, 2014

CLEVELAND — Surveillance video released by police shows Tamir Rice being shot within 2 seconds of the patrol car stopping near him. In that time, Officer Timothy Loehmann told the boy to put his hands up, but he didn’t, according to police officials.

Count out two seconds to yourself.

Officer Frank Garmback pulled into the park after seeing Tamir at a distance and slammed on the brakes when Tamir did not run, as they had expected, Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association president Jeff Follmer said in an interview. That caused the car to slide on the slick grass and stop within a few feet of the boy, he said.

And the cop jumped out and shot him from a distance of less than three yards -- all within two seconds.

Garmback, as Loehmann’s field training officer that day, and the rookie had discussed tactics while approaching the park, Follmer said.

The officers also thought they were confronting someone around 20 years old, Follmer said. They didn’t learn Tamir’s age until later that day.

‘‘In their mind-set, they’re still thinking it’s an older male, not a 12-year-old kid,’’ Follmer said. ‘‘That’s what they see right there, right then.’’

That justifies it all then.

An autopsy released Friday said Tamir was 5-foot-7 and 195 pounds....

He was a big kid.

"A shooter wounded two boys and a girl outside an alternative high school Friday in what is believed to be a gang-related attack, Portland police said. The victims apparently are students at Rosemary Anderson High School, which serves about 190 at-risk students. Portland has been troubled by gang-related violence for years and has seen a spike this year. Officers don’t know whether the shooter was alone or with others, but police Sgt. Pete Simpson said preliminary information suggests it’s gang-related. The bureau’s gang unit was deployed in the investigation. Portland police have been calling for more resources to deal with the gang problem. The paper quoted the director of the city’s Office of Violence Prevention, Antoinette Edwards, as saying a few people are responsible for much of the violence. “We are allowing 17 to 20 violent people — shooters — to bully and to hold us hostages, our kids, our communities, our homes, our parks,” she said."

"Officer fatally shoots man after stabbing at Brooklyn synagogue" by Marc Santora and Joseph Berger, New York Times  December 10, 2014

NEW YORK — A New York City police officer shot and killed a man who stabbed an Israeli rabbinical student at a Brooklyn synagogue early Tuesday, according to the police.

Another false flag if not outright hoax-- especially given what is happening in Jerusalem and Israel now!

The man, identified as Calvin Peters, entered the Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters around 1:40 a.m. and confronted students studying in the building, according to the authorities.

The stabbing victim was Levi Rosenblat, a 22-year-old rabbinical student from Beitar Illit, Israel, according to the Chabad-Lubavitch website.

Rosenblat, who the police said was stabbed in the head, was in stable condition at Kings County Hospital.

Police Commissioner William J. Bratton said, “It is not a terrorism incident.” The investigation had yet to confirm any bias-based motive.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, in a statement, said that as a precaution, security at Jewish religious institutions across the city would be increased while the attack was being investigated.

He praised the police, who, he said, “responded quickly to a tense and dangerous situation” and prevented a greater tragedy from unfolding.

“This incident also highlights the urgent need for increased services for emotionally disturbed or troubled people,” he said.

The sister of the dead man said in an interview that Peters was bipolar and had stopped taking his medication.

Part of the attack was recorded on security cameras being monitored by nearby police officers and security personnel.

The building is the leading center for the Chabad movement, which is dedicated to encouraging Jews around the world to be more observant.

It is often crowded with students, who can be found in the library studying at all hours.

According to Lubavitch officials who spoke to witnesses, the assailant pulled up to the building in a silver Nissan, apparently slipped past a police guard, entered the building, and went down to the cavernous synagogue.

Despite the hour, more than a dozen men were studying there.

When the intruder stabbed Rosenblat, some of the students threw a table at him, trying to stop him, an official said.

"Body-camera companies see their business skyrocketing; Online archiving a growth industry" by Drew Harwell, Washington Post  December 08, 2014

WASHINGTON — President Obama’s call last week to spend $75 million to outfit America’s police departments with body cameras was celebrated as a move toward officer accountability after the killing of an unarmed teenager in Ferguson, Mo. Suddenly the fledgling body-camera industry stands to make a fortune off police forces nationwide with newfound millions to spend.

The White House would help buy 50,000 body cameras through a proposed spending match with local law enforcement, nearly doubling the number of body cameras in use across the country. And for the two companies in control of this market, the money represents a gold mine: $75 million is more than seven times what Taser International made from body-camera sales last year.

A spokesman for Taser, best known for its electroshock guns, called the Ferguson shooting a ‘‘massive awareness campaign’’ for police body cameras, and investors have feverishly jumped onboard. Taser’s stock has more than doubled, to $24 a share, since Officer Darren Wilson shot Michael Brown in August, climbing Friday to its highest point in a decade.

At least someone is going to make a buck off all this.

Police body cameras, which boosters call one of the best ways to reduce false complaints and prevent abuses of power, were cast into the center of a major policy push after Brown’s killing, when a grand jury declined to charge Wilson last month. Police agencies wanting the equipment have two options for where to direct their budgets: Vievu, a private Seattle firm that says it has sold more than 40,000 cameras, and Taser, which has sold about 30,000.

‘‘We are feeling phenomenal right now,’’ Taser chief executive Patrick Smith said in an earnings call in October. ‘‘What everybody thought was crazy five years ago is now accepted as inevitable.’’

And the cameras are just one money maker. Taser is also selling subscriptions to its online data cloud, where terabytes of police video footage can be uploaded, encrypted, and stored. Vievu is working with Microsoft to develop its own cloud platform.

The services solve the police problem of how to manage its sensitive video. Taser’s service even comes with redaction features that can blur or mute on command. But they also give the camera companies a lucrative service that keeps agencies locked in and paying long term. About 75 percent of the body cameras Taser sold this year have been packaged with contracts for Evidence.com, Taser’s cloud service, which sells for up to $55 per officer a month. Nearly all police departments that signed on, Taser said, opted for multiyear deals.

‘‘The upfront cameras themselves are not that interesting. They are, or will be, fairly quickly commoditized. What investors will pay for is a recurring revenue stream,’’ said Steve Dyer, a senior research analyst with Craig-Hallum Capital Group. Taser ‘‘rightly saw early on that selling a plastic camera is going to be a lot worse of a business than building long-term relationships.’’

The industry is still very much in its infancy: The 50,000 cameras supported under Obama’s proposal will cover only 7 percent of the nation’s more than 700,000 sworn officers. That has investors moving in quickly for a foothold in a rising industry.

In two days after the White House’s announcement, the market value of Digital Ally, a small Kansas company that makes a video-recording police flashlight, exploded from $28 million to $55 million.

‘‘I knew once the masses found out this technology existed, everyone would be clamoring for it,’’ Vievu chief executive Steve Ward said. ‘‘My dream of putting a camera on every cop is just coming true even quicker.’’
