SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp., the world's biggest software maker, reported profit that met analysts' estimates after job cuts and lower expenses helped make up for slumping computer demand.
Third-quarter net income fell to $2.98 billion.... Microsoft plans to eliminate 5,000 jobs by the middle of 2010, with the goal of saving $1.5 billion annually in operating expenses. The company is cutting travel spending, putting off part of a campus expansion, and paying less for contract workers. Microsoft said yesterday it may reduce expenses more than predicted earlier....
