"Lawmakers issue call to preserve the Globe; Most in Mass. delegation ask Times Co. to find way to prevent a shutdown" by Robert Gavin, Globe Staff | April 29, 2009
All but one member of the Massachusetts congressional delegation has sent a letter to New York Times Co. chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr., expressing concerns about the threatened shutdown of The Boston Globe and urging him to work toward a solution that "preserves the newspaper for the future."
I say let them die.
The letter was released by the Boston Newspaper Guild, the Globe's largest union, representing more than 600 editorial, advertising, and business office employees. The Times Co. has threatened to shutter the Globe unless the Guild and other unions agree to $20 million in concessions by Friday. The Globe is projected to lose $85 million this year, according to the Times Co....
Unions and management have negotiating sessions underway to try to reach an agreement on concessions before the Friday deadline. Yesterday, management officials met with the union that represents the Globe's press operators; today they are scheduled to meet with the Guild and the mailers union, which represents workers who insert advertising and editorial sections into the newspaper and prepare it for delivery.
Cutting the negotiations a LITTLE CLOSE, ain't they? Almost as if management needs to create a CRISIS CONTEXT to screw its workers, huh? Ever wonder why the liberal papers hate unions, readers? I have.
Martin Callaghan, president of the Boston Newspaper Printing Pressmen's Union, Local 3, yesterday called the situation difficult. His members only a few months ago ratified a contract in which they gave up $8.5 million in concessions. The Times Co. is now seeking another $2.2 million from the Globe unit, which has about 90 members.
Typical Jew York Times behavior!
"We are trying to reach an agreement, but I think it's going to come down to the wire," Callaghan said. "We do want to help the Globe, but it's very difficult."
The letter to Sulzberger, on congressional letterhead, was signed by senators Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry, and by every representative except Stephen Lynch, Democrat of South Boston. "Congressman Lynch felt that, while he respects the decision of others who decided otherwise, given his own position, it was inappropriate and a conflict of interest for him to sign onto this letter," his spokeswoman, Meaghan P. Maher, said in a statement.
In the letter, the senators and representatives called the Globe "an immense asset to Boston and all of New England" that has provided news, jobs, and "a constant reminder that the press serves an indispensable role in our free society."
What, LYING, AGENDA-PUSHING and WAR-PROMOTION?
I'm so sick of he MSM and its elite defenders telling us how great the paper is?
Maybe this is why: Slow Saturday Special: Protecting Politicians
Some journalism professors said the letter could create a tricky situation for the Globe because the union represents journalists who cover the politicians.
Tom Fiedler, dean of the Boston University College of Communication, said the lawmakers probably acted with the best intentions. Still, he said, "It poses a conflict for the Globe in some sense because clearly you have people who are being covered carefully by the Globe, especially its Washington bureau, weighing in on the paper's fate."
Pfffft!
Stephen Burgard, director of Northeastern University's School of Journalism, said the legislators appear to be acting on behalf of the "public interest of saving the newspaper."
Yeah, SINCE WHEN?
--more--"
This is the type of reason as to why the Globe is tanking.
Self-aggrandizing, self-adulating shit like this after they tell so may lies every damn day!
If I'm sick of them (a decades-long purchaser) I can see why kids are reading the blogs and adults are putting down the paper.
