A judge ordered a 20-day psychiatric evaluation yesterday for an Israel native who is accused of rushing the cockpit of a plane en route from New York to Tel Aviv on Friday night.

An off-duty pilot and three other passengers wrestled Atmor to the floor of the aircraft and tied him up with a seat belt and a cord from a pair of headphones, according to a police report filed in East Boston Municipal Court.
Atmor pleaded not guilty to one count of interfering with an aircraft and was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital. His attorney, David Meier, told reporters that Atmor was returning to Israel for psychiatric help. Speaking on behalf of Atmor's father, Meier apologized to the crew and passengers on the plane. The father, David Atmor, was at the courthouse but declined to speak with reporters.
"It is very clear . . . that he is in the throes of a major mental illness," Meier said of Itay Atmor. "He does not know where he is today. He does not know who he is. . . . The son intended no harm."

A police report filed in court yesterday described a dramatic struggle that started 10 minutes after the Delta flight took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.
One passenger said that moments before Atmor rushed the cockpit, he was muttering that he lived "6,000 years ago," according to the report. "He kept saying that he was afraid the plane was not going to Zion [Israel]," the off-duty pilot, Oz Tsavary, told police, noting that Atmor was speaking in Hebrew.
Another passenger, Shalev Holv, a former Israeli Army captain, said: "It took us a while to cuff him. He seemed to possess unusual strength for a skinny guy." Atmor is an Israeli citizen who has been living in Medford and, according to the police report, selling Dead Sea soap at the CambridgeSide Galleria mall.

Atmor told police he had a panic attack. "I attempted to open the door to the pilots by pressing 1, 2, 3, 4 three times," Atmor said, according to the report filed in court. "I started to cry. I started to pray." His friend, Yosef Edri, told police that Atmor had served three years in an elite unit of the Israeli Army.
