Ever Unfaithful

Think of it as a divorce.

First: Fidelity reports big gains

Then:

Fidelity Investments will shutter its offices in Marlborough by the end of next year and move almost all of the 1,100 jobs there out of state, a spokeswoman said yesterday.

Patrick says Fidelity left him in dark on jobs move

That's usually how they f*** you.

Patrick aims to meet with Fidelity on loss of jobs

So how did it go?

"Jobs move final, Fidelity tells governor; Based on real estate, not economic outlook" by Michael Levenson, Globe Staff / March 25, 2011

Governor Deval Patrick, emerging yesterday from a 45-minute meeting with Abigail Johnson, the billionaire president of one of Fidelity’s divisions, expressed his “wounded pride’’ over the company’s decision to move nearly 1,100 jobs out of Massachusetts.

“Fidelity is a Massachusetts icon,’’ he said. “It’s not just a company.’’

He said Johnson had apologized to him for informing him of the move while he was in England last week, but said Johnson told him “that decision is made, had been made some time ago, and is not reversible.’’

Johnson, the daughter of Fidelity’s chairman, ignored shouted questions from reporters as she left the governor’s office and ducked into a nearby elevator. “It was a very nice meeting,’’ she said, as the elevator doors closed.

Fidelity’s decision to move the jobs out of state rankled Patrick, and the timing of the announcement, while he was on an international trade mission, resulted in criticism that he was neglecting his duties at home.

Oh, well then it was all worth it.

Neglecting his duties while at home, too.

The governor had complained that the company had not informed him of its decision early enough to allow him to contend that the jobs should remain in the state. He then scheduled the meeting with Johnson, but acknowledged beforehand that there was nothing he could do to stop the jobs from leaving....

Yup, corporations call the tune even here in "liberal" Ma$$achu$ett$!

Johnson is a member of the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership, a group of about a dozen prominent chief executives, who counsel the governor on ways to create jobs in the state.

As they move jobs out of state?

It is really not that valuable; no corporate-promoting mouthpiece is.

But Patrick has said that Fidelity executives have not always been in close contact with him or his office.

“Partnership has got to be a two-way street, which means we have to have more often, more frequent, and more substantive conversation and communication, and she expressed that, as well,’’ Patrick said.

This is feeling more and more like a rape, isn't it?

Since 1996, Fidelity has received a state tax break designed to keep mutual funds from moving out of Massachusetts. At the time, the deal was estimated to save Fidelity about $20 million a year.

And then they pull out before..... !!!!!!!

Those just about say it all.

Rhode Island has also extended benefits to Fidelity. Next Tuesday, the Massachusetts Senate plans to summon Fidelity executives to a hearing on the tax break.

Patrick said the tax break was barely discussed during his meeting with Johnson. “They know that they’re going have to address some of these questions on Tuesday,’’ he said.

I must have missed it in my skim because I never saw another story about it.

So sorry I missed it.

Something else I never saw in the printed paper:

The company does not plan to give back $20 million in state corporate incentives, despite its decision to close a plant and lay off 800 workers in Mass.
