Big Stories From Maine

There may be others; however, I rarely make it to the second section of the Globe these days. I don't even finish the first section if I bother to read it at all. I offer my apologies in advance for anything I may have missed, dear and beloved readers. 

Plan to bring elephant to Maine draws critics

There was once a day where I cared about that story and would have devoted time to read it; however, those days are long past. I simply no longer have the required time or patience.

OSSIPEE, N.H. — He had sworn to protect Krista Dittmeyer while her boyfriend was in jail. Instead, prosecutors say, Michael Petelis lured the young mother to his home, where she was beaten with a mallet, bound in duct tape, and stuffed in the trunk of her car.

Dittmeyer’s body was later found in a pond near the New Hampshire ski area where her car — its engine running and her 14-month-old girl inside — had been abandoned.

“Instead of protecting her … what he [Petelis] was doing was setting up her final demise,’’ said Jane Young, an assistant New Hampshire attorney general, describing in court yesterday how Petelis and two others stole drugs and money from Dittmeyer, 20, of Portland, Maine....

In court papers filed yesterday, prosecutors said the three men plotted to rob Dittmeyer, who moved to Portland shortly after her 2008 high school graduation and had been working most recently as a waitress at a South Portland restaurant....
