Huge fraud in T passes alleged

Authorities said yesterday that they had uncovered a massive scheme to print and sell thousands of unauthorized MBTA passes, the largest fare-evasion case in T history and one that has cost taxpayers millions of dollars over the past four years.

The $4 million scheme to distribute fraudulent MBTA passes involved a young couple from Revere and a network of distributors, authorities revealed yesterday, as the details of the largest fare-evasion case in T history came into sharper focus.

MBTA looks to alter rail pact

State transportation officials said that they were scrutinizing possible changes to the MBTA’s contract with the company that runs the commuter rail system — or perhaps a takeover of the railroad’s operation — following revelations that the Mass. Bay Commuter Railroad was being paid bonuses for “on-time performance’’ even when service had sunk to an all-time low.
