CIA Sees Window in Yemen

A window with crosshairs, oh joy!

"Yemenis agree to hold talks on transfer of power" June 14, 2011|By Ahmed Al-Haj, Associated Press

SANA, Yemen — Yemen’s acting president agreed yesterday with opposition parties to begin discussions about how to transfer power from the country’s embattled president, an opposition spokesman said....

A senior Yemeni official in the Saudi capital, where Saleh is hospitalized, said the president’s condition was stable but not improving....

See: Saleh Seriously Wounded

Yesterday’s meeting, thought to have been convened under Western pressure, took place at Hadi’s Sana residence, which witnesses said was surrounded by members of the special forces, an elite outfit led by Saleh’s son and onetime heir apparent, Ahmed....

Trying to get another one of our men in there.

Tensions remain between forces loyal to Saleh and armed tribesmen led by Sadeq al-Ahmar, a onetime ally of the president who switched sides in March to join protesters staging mass demonstrations to demand the president’s ouster.

The two sides fought fierce street battles in Sana in late May and early this month, causing extensive damage to several neighborhoods....

In Sana, news of the agreement between Hadi and the opposition appeared to have no immediate impact. Witnesses said troops loyal to and opposed to Saleh have been significantly reinforced, with more checkpoints and plainclothes gunmen visible on the streets.

Beside the armed tribesmen, troops from the elite First Armored Division, whose commander mutinied and joined the protesters in March, have been squaring up in the capital against the presidential guard and the special forces, both under the command of the president’s son.

If you are for the people you are a mutineer?

Airstrikes, meanwhile, targeted Muslim militants in control of a southern Yemeni town, killing three suspected extremists yesterday, military and medical officials said.

"CIA to send armed drones into Yemen" by Greg Miller Washington Post / June 15, 2011

WASHINGTON — The CIA is expected to begin operating armed drones over Yemen, expanding the hunt for Al Qaeda operatives in a country where counterterrorism efforts have been disrupted by political chaos, US officials said.

The plan to use CIA-operated Predator and other unmanned aircraft reflects a decision by President Obama that the Al Qaeda threat in Yemen has grown so serious that patrols by US military drones are not enough.

Not the change I was hoping for.

Officials said the CIA would operate in close coordination with the Joint Special Operations Command, which has been flying Predators and other remotely piloted planes over Yemen for much of the past year.

Related: Obama's Airstrike Scalpel

Yeah, they had to slow it up and stop at one point because they were hitting civilians and local government guys because of bad tips, but you know....

Because it operates under different legal authorities than the military, the CIA may have greater latitude to carry out strikes if Yemeni cooperation with American forces is diminished or cut off.

Can I just state for the record how sick I am with the pelting of the planet with mass-murdering missiles? And the second part there SURE LOOKS like an ILLEGALITY to ME!

Yup, CIA will do WHATEVER it WANTS from ON HIGH!

A CIA spokeswoman declined to comment. National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said the White House would not comment. The CIA’s plans were first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The decision marks a major escalation of the clandestine war in Yemen, as well as a substantial expansion of the CIA’s drone war.

The agency pioneered the use of armed drones in Afghanistan a decade ago and has carried out hundreds of strikes in Pakistan in recent years. As a result, officials said, the CIA has developed substantial expertise in using a combination of drone surveillance and the cultivation of human source networks to carry out strikes in a country where the US military has limited ability to operate....

The whole pro-war bent bothers me.

Unrest continues to grow. Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis demonstrated in nearly every major city of the country, demanding trials for the family and close aides of the president. They were the largest protests since Saleh left the country....

Those must be the "terrorists" the AmeriKan army is worried about.

"Militants in Yemen strike city, threaten government officials; Security forces fled the attack, residents said" by Laura Kasinof, New York Times / June 16, 2011

SANA, Yemen — Militants made a serious incursion early yesterday into a provincial capital in Yemen’s southeast, warning government officials to leave or face retaliation. The attack was the latest case of armed groups taking advantage of the security vacuum created by the country’s prolonged political crisis.

Southern Yemen is a hotbed for antigovernment groups, including separatists and Islamic militants, only some of whom belong to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen’s local branch of the global terrorist network.

The militants, whose affiliation was not known, took over the central bank and a police base, along with other key buildings in the city of Hawta, the capital of Lahij Province, residents said.

Security forces withdrew, they said, leaving civilians to try to fight off the militants.

This is beginning to stink, and I know my newspaper won't clear up the cloud, muck, or murk.

They said the militants announced via megaphones that all government officials must leave within 24 hours or face retaliation. They then retreated from the city.

“In the morning, fear was controlling all of the civilians,’’ said Ayed, a Hawta resident who did not want his last name used out of fear....

Sounds like the AmeriKan government all right.

An official from the Lahij governor’s office and another Yemeni official confirmed the clashes, but they said security forces had fought the militants....

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has not claimed responsibility for the fighting in Abyan and Lahij on jihadi Internet forums, according to terrorism experts.

Then it must really be a people's revolt if the western-backed intelligence operations haven't claimed responsibility.

Meanwhile, President Ali Abdullah Saleh remained in Saudi Arabia for medical treatment for serious injuries from an attack June 3 on the mosque at the presidential palace.

Yes, and if you had read my link from above you would find it was an inside job that has been more or less forgotten by the AmeriKan media (which tells you something right there).

But he will be back soon?

"Yemeni president to return ‘in days’; Opponents vow to resist Saleh" by Ahmed Al-Haj, Associated Press / June 18, 2011

SANA, Yemen — Yemen’s president plans to return home within days, following treatment in Saudi Arabia for serious injuries he suffered in an attack on his palace, officials said, as hundreds of thousands of his opponents rallied in the streets yesterday to say he would not be welcome back.

President Ali Abdullah Saleh was badly burned in the June 3 blast...

Officials in Saudi Arabia said Saleh was completing his treatment and has been able to carry out a few simple physical exercises....

Translation: He's in bad shape.

Much is at stake in Yemen’s political turmoil, which began with antigovernment protests in February. The country is the poorest in the Arab world, suffers numerous internal conflicts and is a potential source of instability for neighboring Saudi Arabia and other oil-rich parts of the Arabian Peninsula.

If you can squeeze through that window (or shipping lanes).

For the United States and Europe, the main concern is the Al Qaeda offshoot that has found refuge in Yemen’s mountainous hinterlands and has been behind several nearly successful strikes on US targets.

The months of protests were inspired by successful uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia. Crowds took to the streets to demand that the autocratic leader step down after nearly 33 years in power. The largely peaceful movement gave way to heavy street fighting when tribal militias took up arms in late May....

Yeah, ignore all those people the government murdered beforehand.

I'm sick of the slanted s*** rewrites of history in my background bullshit!!

Yesterday, hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets in what has become a regular outpouring after the week’s main Muslim prayer service. Crowds cried out for King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to keep their president out of Yemen....

They carried banners calling for a transitional council to manage the country until elections could be held....

Oh, how unreasonable!

The United States, which had relied on Saleh’s cooperation in battling the Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, has been pressing him to step down as a way to end the crisis.

Meaning we have our own man waiting in the wings.

“We call for an immediate, peaceful, and orderly transition in Yemen that allows the Yemeni people to realize their aspirations,’’ State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters in Washington yesterday.

Translation: We are cutting him loose.

I think I see a light coming through the window:

"Yemen militants use tunnel to escape prison; 62 flee during coordinated assault on jail" by Mohammed al-Qadhi and Peter Finn, Washington Post / June 23, 2011

SANA, Yemen — More than 60 Islamist militants tunneled out of a prison in Yemen yesterday in a well-executed escape that highlighted the security risks in a nation that is increasingly unstable and home to Al Qaeda’s most potent regional affiliate.

Okay, that's it, they make me do it.

Yeah, well, which "Al-CIA-Duh" would that be, huh?

The prison break, which occurred in the eastern port city of Mukalla, was coordinated with militants attacking from the outside to divert the guards — a tactic that Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, also known as AQAP, used last summer to free prisoners in the southern city of Aden.

Among the escapees yesterday were members of an Al Qaeda cell that has killed foreign tourists and attempted to attack the US Embassy in Yemen and other Western targets, Yemeni officials said. AQAP was behind the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound commercial flight on Christmas Day 2009 and the mailing of bombs on cargo planes destined for the United States.

The prison break could inject committed fighters into the group’s ranks....

Translation: they were let loose.

Yup, CIA-Duh got some "new" fighters.

Yesterday’s escape, though far from the first in Yemen, came at a moment of political crisis in the country and seemed likely to heighten fears among US counterterrorism officials that AQAP is gathering strength as the authority of the central government weakens.

So we gotta get in there and fire away with the missiles!

President Ali Abdullah Saleh left Yemen for Saudi Arabia on June 3 after he was injured in an attack on his palace during days of bloody street fighting in the capital.

Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi has been the acting president since Saleh’s departure, and although the clashes between government loyalists and rival tribes in Sana have abated, the political process has stalled.

Sharply rising prices of food and gas, shortages of drinking water and long power cuts are adding to the sense of crisis. US officials are eager to revive a political process that seeks to incorporate opposition groups and key tribal groups while sidelining Saleh, who insists that he will return to Yemen when his health allows.

Said he would be back in days and here we are. Sigh.

Jeffrey Feltman, the US assistant secretary of Near Eastern affairs, was in Sana yesterday and was scheduled to hold talks with several political figures, including Saleh’s son, who controls the country’s Republican Guard, a powerful military force.

But they are a good Republican Guard so ignore the bodies over the last few months.
