Into the Big Dig Void

A drilling contractor for the state will bore 100 feet into the ground near South Station next month in an attempt to determine the size, cause, and best way to fill a void that has formed below one of the Big Dig tunnels, the state’s highway administrator said yesterday.

Working at night amid the tracks, crews will drill a hole about 4 inches wide along the outside of the Interstate 90 Connector tunnel to collect soil samples. The state disclosed last month that a sinkhole perhaps as long as the tunnel itself has opened and filled with water, 60 feet below ground.
