A senior US official acknowledged Thursday that the recent increase in drone strikes on insurgents in Pakistan - targeting mostly Al Qaeda but other militants as well - is partly a result of frustration with Islamabad. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive operations.

And earlier this week, NATO sealed agreements to ship tons of supplies out of Afghanistan through northern and western countries, bypassing Pakistan, which has kept its borders closed to NATO trucks in response to the killing of 24 Pakistani troops by NATO forces.
I'm proud of the Pakistanis for sticking with that position in the face of so much pressure.
That's that the empire is truly concerned about: supply lines. Still gonna need 'em after 2014.
Perhaps most pointedly, President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan was not invited until the last minute to the NATO summit that President Obama hosted in Chicago last month, and did not get the private meeting with the US leader that he wanted.
Obama also publicly thanked Central Asian nations and Russia for recent help in war supply. He did not mention Pakistan’s years of help doing the same thing before the gates were closed last fall.
The United States has given Pakistan billions of dollars in aid to support both its government and the fight against Islamist militants....
Implication being the ungrateful bastards took our tax money, blah, blah, blah, blah.

But it is divided by ethnic, political, and sectarian tensions, and is also believed to be a hiding place for Taliban and Al Qaeda militants.
The latest violence there started hours after the Pakistani Navy said it had court-martialed three officers for “negligence’’ in connection with a dramatic Taliban attack on a naval base in the southern port city of Karachi last year.
The brazen 18-hour assault on Naval Station Mehran last May destroyed two US-supplied surveillance aircraft and killed 10 people on the base.
The ability of the militants to penetrate the high-security base led to speculation they may have had inside information or assistance.

President Asif Ali Zardari stands accused of taking $12 million in kickbacks from a customs contract awarded to a Swiss company when his wife, Benazir Bhutto, was prime minister in the mid-1990s.
Swiss authorities charged him with money laundering, but the case dragged on for years, only to collapse in 2007 after military leader Pervez Musharraf arranged for the charges to be dropped as part of a political deal with Zardari’s wife.
Two years later, in 2009, the Supreme Court declared that deal, known as the National Reconciliation Order, illegal. Since then it has pressed the government to write to the Swiss authorities in order to revive the case.
