Police are investigating an alleged suicide pact between two teenage girls — one a student at Winthrop High School and one at Tewksbury Memorial High — after finding threatening comments from them on social media, officials said.
Tewksbury police Lieutenant Robert Stephens said police found comments that “could have been taken as threatening in nature” on social media. They notified Winthrop police at about 9:50 a.m. Thursday.
Winthrop police Chief Terence Delehanty said comments allegedly from the 16-year-old Winthrop High student were threatening toward her school.
“Out of an abundance of caution,” Winthrop High School was put in a hold-in-place at 11:15 a.m., Delehanty said. Students and staff were able to continue working in their classrooms, but no one could roam the halls or leave the building.
Police located the girl a block away from the school at 12:40 p.m. and took her “to an appropriate place where she can get help,” said Delehanty, who added the two girls had a suicide pact. She was not carrying any weapons, he added.
In Tewksbury, officers placed the high school in a semi-lockdown before removing a female student.
