"Former Hull police sergeant indicted for stealing from union, association" by Melissa Hanson, Globe Correspondent March 13, 2015
A former Hull police sergeant has been indicted for stealing thousands from the police union and the police relief association, authorities said Friday.
Gregory M. Shea, 53, of Scituate was indicted by a Plymouth County grand jury on three counts of larceny over $250, Attorney General Maura Healey’s office said. Shea will be arraigned in Plymouth Superior Court at a later date.
An investigation of Shea, who served as the treasurer of the Hull Police Union and the Hull Police Relief Association from 2004 to February 2014, began in March 2014, Healey’s office said in a statement.
Shea allegedly wrote more than $20,000 in checks to himself from accounts held by the union and the association from April 2008 and February 2014, the statement said. He also used those accounts to make more than $13,000 in electronic payments for his home mortgage and pay more than $80,000 in charges on his personal credit cards.
Shea was only entitled to a small amount of the money and the majority was misappropriated, the attorney general’s office said.
The bank accounts for those entities primarily included donations from residents and businesses and from fund-raisers in the community, Healey’s office said.
The telephone number listed for Shea in Scituate was disconnected Friday.
