A Yarmouth couple is facing criminal charges after they allegedly stashed a stolen 58-inch television set into their SUV and took off — despite their 5-year-old son falling out of the back seat in the Falmouth Mall parking lot on Sunday, officials said.
“We believe they came to Falmouth to steal a television set,’’ Falmouth Police Chief Edward Dunne said of the couple, Lisa Degerolamo and Daniel McLaughlin, both 29. “Within a few minutes they returned and retrieved the boy,’’ Dunne said.
Dunne said civilian witnesses saw the child fall out of the SUV and told the couple they were calling police. When the couple returned, civilians told them not to leave and police had been called. One witness took a photo of the Buick with Degerolamo behind the wheel, and others got the license plate.
“They grabbed the boy, put him in the car, and drove off again,’’ the chief said.
According to Dunne and the office of Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe, the couple identified themselves as the boy’s parents. When police arrested them in Yarmouth Sunday night, the state Department of Children and Families was there and took the child into custody.
“The little boy is currently in the custody of the Department of Children and Families,’’ DCF spokeswoman Cayenne Isaksen wrote in an e-mail.
According to police, the couple went into the Walmart in the Falmouth Mall and loaded the television onto a carriage....
