MIAMI — Prosecutors are looking into the fatal shooting of a mentally ill man by a Florida police officer, but his family called this week for an independent investigation of the death, releasing footage from a police dashboard camera to bolster their case.
In February, Miami Gardens officer Eddo Trimino went to the home of Lavall Hall, 25, after his mother called 911 to report that her son was having a violent episode. Hall suffered from schizophrenia and had recently been released from a mental health hospital, according to a federal wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family against the city.
Authorities say Hall repeatedly swung a metal broom and refused commands to stop, although the 19-minute dash camera video released Wednesday by family lawyer Glen Goldberg does not show that. It does, however, include audio with Trimino yelling at Hall to get on the ground.

‘‘Get on the ground or you’re dead,’’ Trimino, 34, yells just before firing five shots while appearing to back up. Hall is off camera at that point.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Police have opened a criminal investigation into an officer who was videotaped pushing and slapping a homeless man at a bus terminal in downtown Fort Lauderdale — a city that made national headlines for its ban on feeding homeless people in some public areas.

In the video, Officer Victor Ramirez confronts a man who had been sleeping on a bench inside the open-air terminal. Ramirez shoves the man to the ground, then slaps him hard in the face and handcuffs him.
‘‘I tell you what to do, you’re going to do it — it’s just that simple,’’ Ramirez tells Bruce Laclair, 58. ‘‘What do you think is going to happen? What do you think is going to happen? I didn’t want to take you to jail.’’
The video, apparently taken by a man at the bus terminal and provided to a local television station, appeared on YouTube shortly after the Sunday incident.
Ramirez, a nine-year veteran of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, was placed an indefinite leave with pay as soon as the video surfaced, Chief Frank Adderley said Tuesday. Ramirez was working an off-duty detail at the bus station, Adderley said.

The latest incident comes after Fort Lauderdale made national headlines for arresting homeless advocates who were ignoring a city ordinance banning feeding of homeless people in certain public areas, such as city parks.

The three men — Thomas Jordan Driver, 25, David Elliot Moran, 47, and 42-year-old Charles Thomas Newcomb — each were charged Thursday with one state count of conspiracy to commit murder, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office said in a written statement.
The state said the murder plotting started after Driver, an officer at the Department of Corrections Reception and Medical Center in rural north Florida, had a fight with the inmate.
Moran is currently an officer sergeant at that facility. Newcomb was fired in 2013 for failing to meet training requirements, according to the department.
Bondi’s office said the three were also members of the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.
The group that has garnered attention in recent months for distributing fliers that likened protesters in Ferguson, Mo., to terrorists.
I think my suspicions were just confirmed.
The wide-ranging investigation included the FBI, US Customs and Border Patrol, and various state and local agencies.
The FBI’s office in Jacksonville said it would not comment on an open investigation.

TAMPA — A dog rescued after being shot and tied to railroad tracks in Florida has been released from a veterinary clinic.
Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Service posted a message on its Facebook page late Friday saying the dog, Cabela, had “left the building to go into super secret, never to be revealed, protective custody.” The 1-year-old mixed-breed dog was in hiding to “heal, socialize and begin her transition to a new life,” it said.
Tampa police have said Cabela was shot March 4 because it wouldn’t fight.
The Tampa Tribune reported that a judge Friday denied bail for two men accused of using Cabela for fighting: Darnell Devlin, 18, and Kenny Bell, 21.

The News Herald of Panama City reported that The Life Center: A Spiritual Community has operated a seven-day-a-week party called Amnesia: The Tabernacle since Feb. 28.
A door sign says events are alcohol- and drug-free, but Sheriff Frank McKeithen says church officials are ‘‘trying to get around the laws.’’
Patrons are charged a ‘‘donation’’ of $20 at the door. On the walls inside are T-shirts emblazoned with obscene gestures and signs that say ‘‘I hate being sober.’’
That led city officials to change the church’s tax-exempt status.
