"BC won't air Ayers lecture by satellite; Decision frustrates student organizers" by Peter Schworm, Globe Staff | March 31, 2009

Boston College, citing pressure from Brighton residents and Boston police officers, refused to allow former radical William Ayers to deliver a student-sponsored lecture via satellite yesterday, frustrating student organizers who accused the college of sacrificing academic ideals to assuage public anger.

The move, capping a four-day controversy, followed the college's previous decision to bar Ayers from coming to the campus. Ayers, an education professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, belonged to the Weather Underground, a militant antiwar group responsible for several bombings during the Vietnam War era.

BC said it had received hundreds of complaints about Ayers since Boston radio host Michael Graham blasted his scheduled visit during his Friday program. Many critics, including Boston police officers, threatened to protest the event, citing the Weather Underground's alleged involvement with the killing of a Boston police officer, Walter Schroeder, during a 1970 bank robbery.

Patrick Rombalski, BC's vice president of student affairs, said in a statement yesterday that administrators would not allow the visit nor the teleconference "out of concern for the safety and well-being of our students and respect for the local community where the alleged actions of the Weather Underground continue to reverberate today."

But students said that Ayers, who was scheduled to speak about urban schools and educational inequities, has no proven connection to the Brighton crime and poses no safety risk.

Could Ayers have been an AGENT of the U.S. GOVERNMENT?

How did he end up with a TEACHING JOB after being a "terrorist?"

"It's frustrating to see them cave in to unwarranted hysteria, and base their decision on a crime in which Bill Ayers was never charged or convicted," said Melissa Roberts, vice president of the College Democrats of Boston College, one of the student groups that invited Ayers. "It's an unconscionable violation of academic freedom on a college campus, which should be a place where all ideas are welcome, not just popular ones."

Some ideas (9/11 Truth) are never welcome.

Michael Madormo, president of the BC chapter of Americans for Informed Democracy, said he was disappointed that administrators would not allow Ayers to deliver a lecture remotely.

"Inviting Ayers in no way sanctions his activities in the past, or anything his organization has done," Madormo, a senior, said. "It was done for the sake of academic freedom and the value of hearing all perspectives."

After protracted meetings with administrators over the weekend, students announced that Ayers would deliver his scheduled lecture via satellite from Chicago. But yesterday, BC administrators said they had never approved the talk.

"The emotional scars of the murder of Boston Police Sergeant Walter Schroeder, allegedly at the hands of the Weather Underground, which left nine children fatherless in the shadows of this campus, was an issue that we could not ignore," said college spokesman Jack Dunn. "Our student organizers, who are in their early 20s, cannot fully understand the reaction that this painful chapter in our history evokes in this community."

It's amazing at HOW MUCH they DO IGNORE, though!!

And HOW DO YOU like the CONDESCENSION, young bright people. Yes, that is YOUR COLLEGE talking to you. And you thought the school RESPECTED YOU? They seea CHECKBOOK when they look at you, kids -- NOTHING MORE!!!!

Dunn said the outcry over Ayers's scheduled visit convinced administrators "that we have an obligation to our host community to be sensitive to their concerns and to ensure the safety of our students."

Ayers, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, previously told the Globe that the college's decision to cancel his appearance was "shameful."

Ayers was made a flashpoint in the presidential race when the campaign of John McCain accused Barack Obama of having ties to the former radical. Obama said he only knew Ayers informally and did not support the radical agenda of his past. Since then, Ayers's visits to college campuses have drawn criticism, and some have been canceled.

In the LAND of FREE SPEECH!!!!!!!

After the school's decision, Americans for Informed Democracy and the campus group College Democrats held a lecture last night to discuss the controversy. More than 50 students attended the forum, "Academic Freedom at BC."

"I thought it was really powerful how many people thought this was a real problem," said Alicia Johnson, a BC student. "[It is] a recurring theme at BC; it's not just about Bill Ayers."

AmeriKan censorship? Yeah!

BC student John Murtagh III had a more personal story. His grandfather, John Murtagh, a New York Supreme Court judge, was presiding over the "Panther 21" trial when the Weather Underground planted three bombs at his house in New York in February 1970. Murtagh, a senior, said he wanted to inform other students of the real controversy surrounding Ayers.

"This wasn't just about the school squashing free speech. There was a lot behind the actions of Bill Ayers and the Weather Underground," Murtagh said. "There is a lot more to why it was canceled. Since I had a close, personal connection to the story, I felt I had to come here and let everyone know what the real controversy behind Bill Ayers was."

Yeah, kid, NEVER MIND the WAR CRIMINALS POPULATING the GOVERNMENT!!

Let's worry about some WASHED-UP RADICAL!!!

--more--"

Btw, the tone of the article was pro-cancellation, so you definitely know where the PRO-WAR PAPER comes down on this issue!
