"Clinton pledges long-term support for Haiti's recovery; US pegs $302m for job creation, hurricane relief" by Jonathan M. Katz, Associated Press | April 17, 2009

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton assured Haitians yesterday that the latest aid from America is not just a short-term fix for a country still struggling from last year's devastating storms and grinding poverty that is among the worst in the world.

Clinton told reporters after riding in her motorcade through the pothole-strewn roads of the capital, Port-au-Prince, that she and President Obama have a shared goal of creating jobs and ensuring stability in a country that has had little of either in recent years....

Oh, ISN'T THAT JUST a WONDERFUL JUXTAPOSITION, hmmm?

About says it all.

The United States, Haiti's largest benefactor, pledged $50 million in new aid at a donors conference Tuesday in Washington, bringing the American total for the year to $302 million. In all, the international donors conference raised $324 million for Haiti despite entreaties from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon; Bill Clinton, the former president; and others that $600 million more is needed for economic development and hurricane recovery.

No TRILLION-DOLLAR BAILOUT for the starving black people, huh?

Secretary Clinton, at a joint news conference with Haiti's president, René Préval, said the US commitment to Haiti goes beyond what emerged at the donors conference. "When we start to build roads, we must finish the roads. When we start to help farmers once again make their land rich and cultivatable, we want to be sure they harvest their crops," she said.

Préval said Haiti is grateful for the foreign assistance, which makes up about 60 percent of the government's budget, but said his country must become self-reliant. Clinton, who is stopping in Haiti and neighboring Dominican Republic en route to the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad, also planned to visit a clothing factory that could benefit from a trade deal with the United States intended to spur Haiti's dormant textile industry and create jobs.

Préval welcomed Obama's recent decision to ease travel restrictions for Cuban-Americans visiting Cuba and said he hoped Havana, which was not invited to the Summit of the Americas, can attend the next one. The secretary of state's visit is occurring at yet another crucial time for Haiti. The country has not recovered from last year's food riots or from four storms that killed nearly 800 people and caused $1 billion in damage.

Political tensions also are running high ahead of Sunday's long-delayed Senate elections: Some parties that have been disqualified from running have threatened to disrupt the balloting.

Oh, ELECTIONS!!!!!! THAT'S WHY Haiti has been in the paper lately!!!
