"Patrick's top adviser takes heat for job flap; Fixer Rubin blamed for Walsh misstep" by Matt Viser, Globe Staff | April 8, 2009

.... The episode of state Senator Marian Walsh's ill-fated appointment to a state job left even the governor's most ardent supporters puzzling how Team Patrick stumbled on such a core element of his political persona, his reputation as a reformer.

Patrick's chief handler, master strategist, and key confidant, Doug Rubin, was named chief of staff and put the administration on track two years ago, after a rash of early stumbles generated a backlash for the new governor in 2007 and threatened his carefully honed outsider image....

Stuff is making me wanna puke!

Rubin is one of the governor's closest advisers, essentially serving as Patrick's alter ego at the State House, able to wield the administration's full power with a single phone call. Before meeting with the governor, Cabinet officials, lawmakers, advocates, and media members must go through Rubin. Convincing him of the merits of an issue is almost as good as convincing the governor....

With few exceptions, Rubin has kept Patrick on message and out of trouble. So a key question remains unanswered in the Walsh episode: whether, in this case, Patrick got bad political advice from Rubin or other aides or whether he's ignoring their sound political counsel.

Arrogance of power? And WHO F***ING CARES?

Rubin exercises power firmly but quietly, without swagger. He often bears the brunt of jibes from the governor for his preference of a McDonald's cheeseburger over a filet mignon.

Well, that's setting a good example of healthy eating.

Despite long hours in the State House, he keeps his golf handicap low and his Bruce Springsteen concert attendance high.

And THAT is IMPORTANT!!!!

Since taking the position, he has worn a black bracelet on his left wrist, with the names of his wife and three daughters on it....

Rubin's State House office, which looks out onto the Boston Common and is adorned with pictures of his three young daughters, is within a few steps of the governor's. He works for the state's top Democrat but comes from a family of mostly Republicans. His father runs Ruby Wines - a fourth-generation, Avon-based wine distributorship where Rubin's uncle and brother also work - and has a membership to the exclusive Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. Rubin spends his time on Beacon Hill, carrying bottles of Diet Coke into meetings with the House speaker and Senate president....

Bernie Madoff circles?

His political clients have been varied, from former state senator Dianne Wilkerson to Representative Charles A. Murphy, a Burlington Democrat who is now chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee.

Ooooh, bad!!!

Rubin also helped run Timothy Cahill's first campaign for treasurer, and then worked for Cahill for three years as first deputy treasurer.

Ooooh, bad!!!

He left to become an architect of Patrick's hugely successful 2006 election campaign, when Patrick ran as an outsider intent on cleaning up the cozy Beacon Hill culture.

Well, you already know what I think of that s***ter!

He returned to the Patrick camp after the campaign, summoned as chief of staff in 2007 to help smooth the waters for Patrick after the governor drew fire for upgrading his state car to a Cadillac, refurnishing his office, hiring a $72,000 aide for his wife, and making a call to a major banking institution on behalf of a controversial subprime lender.

Translation: OUR CHANGE GOVERNOR has been a PREVIEW of OBAMA and NO CHANGE AT ALL!!!!

Those episodes made Patrick seem hypocritical at the time.

Excuse me, Globe, but SEEMED at the TIME? Not IS in the NOW???

"After the campaign that Deval ran, he ended up having a surprisingly tinny ear for the way certain things are going to play," said David Kravitz, a founder of the liberal blog Blue Mass Group. "I would have never expected that, given the perfect political campaign that he ran."

Rubin, who makes $125,000 a year, is credited with aiding many of Patrick's successes, including blocking a constitutional ban to gay marriage and implementing a policy to use civilian flaggers instead of police details.

Yeah, thanks.

Patrick's stumble on Walsh has weakened him at a time of economic crisis and historic budget cuts, as he tries to push ethics and pension reform packages through the Legislature and as he is about to embark on a mission to persuade Massachusetts motorists to accept a 19-cent hike in the gas tax. But administration officials insist the latest missteps are not part of a systemic problem....

Even though he has been acting like this since he got in!
