"VA to review seizure of reporter's gear" by Washington Post | April 13, 2009

WASHINGTON - The Department of Veterans Affairs said it will begin a review today of last week's confiscation of a radio reporter's recording equipment during a public forum at the VA hospital in Washington....

The investigation will explore the actions taken by security guards and hospital public affairs officer Gloria Hairston, who confiscated the sound card from David Schultz's digital recorder during a town hall meeting at the hospital Tuesday night.

VA officials contend that Schultz, who works for WAMU, did not properly identify himself as a reporter. The VA's Advisory Committee on Minority Veterans organized the meeting to hear comments about the veterans' medical care. Schultz said he attended the meeting after learning about it from a VA news release.

Army veteran Tommie Canady told the committee that he had received poor treatment at Washington's VA hospital. Shortly thereafter, Schultz invited Canady into the hallway for a recorded interview. Moments into the interview, according to Schultz, Hairston approached them, telling Schultz that he could not interview Canady until they both signed consent forms. She summoned hospital guards and demanded Schultz hand over his equipment.

"VA patient contracts HIV after error" by Associated Press | April 7, 2009

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - A Veterans Affairs patient who was among thousands treated with unsterilized equipment has tested positive for HIV, the first such case reported since the department warned veterans they could have been exposed to infectious diseases.

The VA previously reported that hepatitis had been found in 16 patients, but the agency cautioned there was no way to prove that the patients contracted the illnesses because of treatment at their facilities....

Of course, the VA has much more serious concerns -- like hassling vets and reporters trying to get the truth out.

Question: Does GOVERNMENT EVER TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for ANYTHING?

The VA earlier this year warned more than 10,000 veterans to get blood tests because they could have been exposed to contamination while getting colonoscopies in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Miami. The endoscopic equipment in question was also used at an ear, nose, and throat facility in Augusta, Ga. All three sites failed to properly sterilize the equipment between treatments.

That's taking care of our troops, 'eh?

The VA has said it does not yet know whether veterans who were treated with the same kind of equipment at its other 150 hospitals may have been exposed to the same mistake before the department had a nationwide safety training campaign. An agency spokeswoman has said the VA is certain the mistake with the equipment was corrected nationwide by March 14. The agency did not return telephone and e-mail messages yesterday.

Yeah, SUPPORT the TROOPS!!!!
