Around New England: You Can't Clean Up Vermont

Well, for one thing, they didn't get hit as hard as southern New England.

And thank the Lord for that!

"Source of nuclear plant leak is found; Repairs made at Vermont Yankee" by Beth Daley, Globe Staff | March 26, 2010

The owner of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Plant said yesterday that it had found the source of a radioactive water leak at the plant just north of the Massachusetts border and has stopped it.

And they expect us to believe them?

The leak originated in two pipes in a concrete tunnel. Engineers also found a floor drain in the tunnel clogged with debris and mud, allowing the radioactive water to escape through an unsealed joint in the tunnel wall into the soil and eventually into ground water.

The leak was discovered two months ago when Entergy Corp., the owner of the plant in Vernon, drilled a monitoring well as part of an industrywide effort to find leaks of tritium, a low-level radioactive byproduct in nuclear plants. None of the tritium made it into any drinking water supplies or the adjacent Connecticut River.

So the liars claim.

But the leak has caused a major credibility problem for Entergy as it seeks permission to extend Vermont Yankee’s operating license another 20 years.

Yeah, that's the agenda-pushing interest the Globe cares about right there.

They have proved it in the past.

And they will prove it again (keep reading).

While there have been similar leaks at more than 20 other nuclear plants around the country, many which have been relicensed, state officials said that Entergy misled them on a number of occasions by denying that the plant had buried piping that could carry radioactive material....

Yeah, who cares if they lied before, right?

Telling the truth now, right?

Entergy’s executive vice president of operations, Mark Savoff, said in a statement that he regretted that the leak occurred and announced the company has begun an effort to become an industry leader in tritium leak prevention and detection.

Pffft!

F*** your PR SHIT, asshole!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday, engineers began pumping contaminated ground water into above-ground containers for processing and reuse in the plant. About 150 cubic feet of soil that contains other contaminants will also be removed.

Yes, KEEP THAT IN MIND as well, readers!!

Environmental advocates said they were pleased that the leak was found, but believe the plant is too old to continue safely.

“If this is the only leak, I am encouraged that it has been found and stopped,’’ said Sandra Levine, senior attorney for the Conservation Law Foundation, a New England advocacy group. “But the existence of leaks for more than two months is an indication of bigger problems. This is not a plant that appears to be safe and reliable.’’

Oh, and here is something the Glob "missed"
:

"I am writing in response to your article on Wednesday about the discovery of cesium-137 in the soil around Vermont Yankee. Cesium-137 is a radioactive isotope that stays hazardous for 600 years. People can ingest it by eating animals or vegetables that are exposed, and it is highly carcinogenic. It has been linked to rare forms of cancer that have been found in children that live near nuclear reactors.

That cesium-137 was found in an area that Vermont Yankee had previously thought to be free of contamination is disconcerting. They told us last week that there weren't any more leaks, which just goes to show that Entergy cannot be trusted to safely operate the reactor.

The lies just keep on coming, don't they?

It is criminal that Vermont Yankee is allowed to pollute our groundwater and soil, and this plant must be shut down as soon as possible. I also urge the House to quickly pass a decommissioning bill that will ensure that Entergy pays to clean up their mess, not Vermont.

"NRC says leaks at Vt. Yankee no threat" by Dave Gram, Associated Press | April 2, 2010

MONTPELIER — Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials sought to reassure lawmakers yesterday that radioactive leaks at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant had not posed any threat to public health and safety.

Oh, the LYING FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is assuring us, hanh?

Well then you wouldn't mind buying a house and living up here with us, right?

The NRC also released a letter from Vermont Yankee’s owner, Entergy Corp., based in New Orleans, saying it had not provided any misleading information to the NRC, like it admitted having provided to Vermont regulators and lawmakers.

Yeah, IT JUST DID THAT to the LOCALS!!

But we should TRUST THEM, yeah!

Governor Jim Douglas’s point man on energy issues, Public Service Commissioner David O’Brien, made some of his strongest comments yet, saying a February Vermont Senate vote blocking relicensing of the reactor did not matter.

Yeah, the STATE OFFICIALS are IN ON IT, too!!!!

Yeah, SCREW YOU, citizens of Vermont!!

And that is supposed to be one of the liberal jewels of the nation?

PFFFFFTTTT
!!!!

And the state’s two consulting economists released a report saying if the plant — located on the Connecticut River in Vernon — shuts down, it could cost the Vermont economy more than 1,000 jobs and $60 million a year in negative economic impacts.

Yeah, and besides CANCERS won't show up for DECADES and the authorities will NEVER BE HELD RESPONSIBLE because we don't know what causes cancer or cancer clusters!

And they wonder why the population is furious?

The House Natural Resources and Energy Committee continued to work on drafting legislation to require Vermont Yankee to beef up payments into its decommissioning fund — something the plant and its ally Douglas have resisted in the past.

The thing should be SHUT DOWN TODAY!!!

Members of that committee and two others had skeptical questions for the NRC officials who testified at yesterday’s hearing.

“I hear the same thing every time I interact with them,’’ Representative Tony Klein, Democrat of East Montpelier and the Natural Resources Chairman, said after the hearing. “I don’t know who’s in charge. I don’t know that they’re making progress. Everything’s always under investigation, or we haven’t completed our report.’’

Yup, the telltale signs of a PATHOLOGICAL LIARS!!!

Klein was referring to testimony from Darrell Roberts and John White, two NRC Northeast regional officials, who said the agency was nearly finished with two reports on the Vermont Yankee investigations. The pair said that the concentration of leaked radioactive materials was too low to be a threat to the public.

Are YOU going to trust this LYING, LOOTING GOVERNMENT?

Or YOUR OWN, Vermonter?

MONTPELIER — The ACLU of Vermont is suing the state after unsuccessfully seeking to find out whether police agencies are using cellphone tracking technology to keep tabs on people’s whereabouts.

In VERMONT?!!!

The state attorney general’s office refused public records requests by the ACLU seeking information about the practice, saying that information is exempt from public records statutes.

Related: Massachusetts Police Take Bad Picture

Yup, fascista thugs are the same everywhere.

So the ACLU filed suit Monday in Washington Superior Court, asking a judge to force the state to produce documents under the Public Records Act.

“The attorney general’s behavior here is a real breach of trust,’’ said Allen Gilbert, executive director. “The Public Records Act specifically requires public agencies to explain the factual basis for denying a request.’’

I'm sorry, but their IS NONE LEFT when it comes to AmeriKan government.

The state hasn’t filed its response yet. But in an interview Tuesday, Attorney General William Sorrell defended law enforcement use of triangulation — technology that uses cellphone tower signals to narrow a person’s location to within a few miles — or data from cellphone records.

But he said details of it fall under Public Records Act exemptions dealing with ongoing criminal investigations, which are not releasable public records.

“We have legal requirements and prohibitions under which we have to live, and we take those seriously,’’ said Sorrell. Referring to cellphone tracking of individuals, he said: “It’s an appropriate investigative tool and I’m certain it has been used in Vermont.’’

Which means it has been USED EVERYWHERE!!

That is why the cellphone sits safely on the dresser at all times.

I never take it with me for this very reason.

My suspicions have only been confirmed.

Fearful that the information could be used the wrong way, privacy advocates nationally have zeroed in on the government’s practice of using information gathered from a cellphone or cellphone records.

Police often seek cellphone location data from phone companies, sometimes without notifying the person. One issue is whether investigators need probable cause to get permission to obtain the information.

“The location information can reveal very personal data, like where they shop, whose houses they visit, churches they attend, therapists they see,’’ said Mariko Hirose, an ACLU legal fellow in New York. “We think this information can reveal a very detailed picture of a person’s life, and it’s the type of personal information that’s designed to be protected by the Fourth Amendment.’’

The what?

In the Vermont case, the ACLU sought records — paper or electronic — regarding requests for cellphone location data made by the attorney general’s office to any court since Jan. 1, 2008.

The office denied the request, but didn’t say why.

Yes, YOUR PUBLIC SERVANTS, Vermont!

When asked if police in Vermont obtain cellphone data to track individuals’ movements without getting search warrants first, Sorrell said: “If I was aware of Vermont law enforcement — in cellphone usage, records or other matters — violating Vermonters’ constitutional rights, I’d do something about it.’’

Pfft!

Then HAND OVER the RECORDS!!!!!!!!!!

Burlington Police Chief Michael Schirling said that his department uses “a variety of technologies in a variety of ways, and we do not disclose details of the technology we use, other than to say it’s with judicial review.’’

Said Montpelier Police Chief Anthony Facos: “Anything that our department does, or operations we participate with, we do follow constitutional and legal requirements, as stated in federal case law.’’ When asked if his department uses cellphone tracking data, he said: “Right now, I’m just not going to say.’’

Yeah, JUST TRUST your LYING and TYRANNICAL GOVERNMENT, Vermonters!

I'm sure they are only looking out for your best interests.

I still can't believe that is happening in VERMONT!

And I was thinking of moving there!

Looks like it doesn't matter where you go in shitty New England.

"Court hears appeal in ’06 death of Vt. student" by John Curran, Associated Press | March 18, 2010

Oh, we are going to show them how to do it, huh?

Yeah, glad you could afford the hundreds of millions to train their police, taxpayers.

So when are our own police going to be properly trained?

Brian Rooney, 39, is serving life in prison for the 2006 killing of Michelle Gardner-Quinn.

The 21-year-old senior from Arlington, Va., who had just transferred to UVM, disappeared Oct. 7, 2006, while her parents were visiting Burlington for parents’ weekend.

A week later, a hiker found her half-dressed body stuffed in a crevice at Huntington Gorge in Richmond, about 20 miles away. She had been sexually assaulted, beaten, and strangled.

Rooney, a stranger who lent her his cellphone in a chance late-night encounter on a Burlington street, was the last person seen with Gardner-Quinn.

Were the cops tracking him?

But he denied harming her. He was charged 12 days later after DNA in semen found on her body matched his DNA, authorities said.

The DNA evidence was the linchpin of the state’s case at trial. Police found no witnesses to the killing, no murder weapon, and no trace evidence on Rooney’s clothing or car.

“Their entire case is predicated upon two-tenths of a nanogram in a suspect source of DNA,’’ defense attorney David Sleigh had told jurors....

Yeah, ANOTHER FRAME-UP!!

Unfortunately, that seems to be the RULE rather than the EXCEPTION when it comes to the American people!!

Of course, if you are in the power structure you are not held to such stringent standards.

Meanwhile, WTF is the legislature doing up there?

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s familiar seal of quality on maple syrup and other packaged foods has been suspended because it has fallen into misuse and become meaningless, the state’s agriculture chief said.

Still, some lawmakers want to save the seal....

Saving something that is misused and meaningless?

Yeah, those are AmeriKan legislators all right!
